My current rear angel has about 1000 km left in it and the front at least 2000 km plus.

Looking at replacing with either another angel or trying out the BT 023
Here is a link with a comparison between the tyres.

My 1st question, if i replace the rear with a BT 023 do i need to replace my front Pirelli Strada with a BT 023
2nd question: what is your opinion of that comparison link on the two tyres?

Hi KIWI - Just my personal opinion, but I'll be replacing my standard 'Dunslips' with BT023s when the time comes. Have used the 21 and 23s on several different bikes and they've seen me OK. As for matching the front to the rear, I don't think it matters on real world roads - they're both excellent tyres - I guess from a cosmetic point of view it may 'look' better, but does that really matter? I wouldn't throw away a front with loads of life on it for the sake of a matching pair.

I think its OK to mix brands (never had an issue) but don't mix types (radial vs ply). I like the BT020 and the 023s. Decent tires. :thumb:

I hear good things about the 023's but don't know anyone who's tried them, let alone on a Versys. I'd replace them both, what're we talking, 600 miles? If you want to know how good the 023's are, or the Angels for that matter, a new set will give you the answer you seek. It does seem that the Angels can kick-off rather suddenly, so buying the new tires while the rear has something left could be wise.

I'am running a strada front and a BT23 rear, non gt model on my FJR with no issues. I don't see why it wouldn't work on the versys. The BT23 has 2500 mile on it now and it's just starting to show any wear. Hope it helps. Ride safe.

Cheers bultaco, that what i may do, put a BT023 on rear next month and replace the front strada at a later date, may even purchase both tyres at same time. The bike shop local bike shop has given me a okay price fitted if i bring the wheels in. can take the back off in a few minutes with wheel stand but never taken front off but can't be that hard if not they said for a extra $10.00 to $20 they would remove front.

I DON'T agree with your comment...don't mix types (radial vs ply).... I know that some Triumphs came from the factory with a bias one end, radial the other.

On cars - NEVER mix them! That's mostly because cars corner in YAW while bikes (with the exception of dirt-track, speedway and ice-racing...) do CO-ORDINATED turns, like aircraft.

I just ordered up some Bridgestone BT003's with some contingency tire money I had.
Ive been really happy with them on the track, and essentially got them for free...... So I figured why not?

I have mixed and matched without problems, most recently the angel back with a storm front. I now have pr3's front and back and they are very nice.

kiwi, the front wheel is easy to remove. With the back wheel up on the stand you can use a car jack under the motor, even on the muffler, to lift the front end. It is very stable. Then it's remove the calipers, pinch bolt and axle, voila. The axle does take a pretty big allen wrench (I just checked: it's a 14mm).

I won't buy another angel. It wore out far too quickly for a s/t tire, and the handling went to sh*t the last 1000 kms.

Cheers for the advice, need to get a 14 mm allen wrench

Handling is my concern as said the rear was noted by a mechanic its on way out and i do ride pretty hard in corners and have felt a slight jink in rear and even with tyres being $$$ here its still better for my peace of mind to change out sooner rather than later on the rear. I at work at moment but from memory the best I got on rear BT 023 is $340 NZ or $285 US

A dealer for BStone tires recommends the front to be BT016 (for its dual compound) and rear BT023. I hv no first hand experience with this combo but seems like some riders did and found it to be good.

Got a couple of friends with BT023, one on a V and the other, KTM SMT, and they have no regrets. My stock Dunlops have a long way to go before I change them to the 023s.

changed tyre

Should kick my own butt for riding the angel to a dangerous state.
Put the new BT 023 on rear and brought the old tyre home and man was it thin in the middle.

Well, if you are going to buy new tires anyway, better do it sooner then later.
Riding an extra 500-1000km on a very worn tire will save you very little money.

How much did you get out of that rear, Phill?
Thread looks very similar on those two tires. Let us know how they compare.

Hi Phil,

Done BT016 front and O23 rear. It a good combo but I changed the front to 023 as found my 016 doesn't grip well when there's sand on the road. Eek...nearly had a crash that!

I think no tire manufacturer would recommend mixing tires but I see no problems with this.

My take is don't skim on tires as it's the only contact we have to the road.
Get the best tire that you feel fits your riding style. Hope you like the BT023.

Leslie, you will feel you're on a different bike. That I can guarantee.

Have used BT 016 and am at present using BT023.

BT 016 is a very soft compound tire and good on wet and dry.More like track tire but not good on dirt road or sand.

BT 023 is the latest tire form Bridgestone and is as good as BT 016 but will not recommend mixing them as they are of difference construction and compound.

BT023 is good at corners and also on wet...:thumb:

Also have a BT023 front waiting for me in the bike shop, will take my front wheel off on my next days off and take into shop as the price i have to fit is if i bring wheels in. Looking forward to taking my front wheel off as have never done that yet but have all the right tools ready to go.
Will probably do friday after working these two night shifts. Ivan 8500 km on that rear angel. Was supposed to change it before a big ride last weekend but there was no one in the shop available to do job last friday. Poked my finger in the old tyre and it was paper thin in the centre, freaked me out a bit, did feel the tyre jump around a bit as it had squared off.

Whatever you do when you replace your OEM crap-flops do NOT replace just one.... i just put an Angel ST on the back of mine, left the OEM on front figuring it would be fine... now in the rain the front lets go before the back, creating understeer....another Pirelli will be one of my first projects this winter....

Just about to remove my front wheel to put a new tyre on, rear end was on wheel stand, had loosen front axle and was about to block up under exhaust and put a ratchet tie-down around handle bars to roof of garage to take weight off jack when thought better ring the bike shop and make sure someone can change the tyre before i drive 15 km to shop and glad i did as both mechanics at the shop away today, they must like taking Fridays off as that happened last week.

Was hoping to scrub in both rear and front new tyre at same time but front will have to wait to Monday.
