I just wondered if anyone else has experienced stress cracks in the windshield brackets. This is the second time I've had to weld/replace my left bracket. Extenuating circumstances in my case is that I've dropped the bike more than once, so the fracture may have been induced by that initial stress, although in both cases the crack showed up well after the drop. In this case the last time my bike was down was last September, and the fracture just showed up recently.

I wondered if the strut on the right side of the headlight assembly bracket helps reinforce the right side while the lack of such a strut on the left side allows more vibration on the left bracket as a possible explanation for the two cracks I've experienced on that side. I also have a Givi windscreen on, which is much bigger than the stock, and would put more stress on the bracket(s) when vibrating over rough roads, and in general. We also have a lot of cobblestone and dirt roads down here in Mexico, so my bike has traversed its fair share of rough roads which might also contribute to this failure. The other factor is that I keep the windshield in the uppermost osition, and the cracks have been below the mounting holes. So, anyone else experienced such a failure?

The good news is that having the aluminum welded locally costs about $4 US, although the last time the weld didn't hold, and I had to replace the bracket anyway.

Looks like it cracked in the same spot both of mine broke off in my crash. Before i went over the hood of the car i saw my Givi/Stock combo snap off and bounce across the road.

I've seen a few reports of broken brackets.
Always with the large aftermarket screens, like Givi. Rough roads also contribute.

In my frontal impact crash brackets didn't snap, but they did bend with MRA windshield attached.

Well, that's obviously from an attributable cause, so not the same etiology as mine. :)

It was interesting to see my windscreen as the crack was obviously becoming worse. The whole front cowling would shake like a bowl of jello on cobbled/rough roads. Interesting that yours bent. Mine seems too brittle to bend. Having replaced this part twice now, I'd put on a heavier steel bracket if it were available.

I love the word choice. The members of this forum still impress me with their erudition. I believe that the bike represents a very wise choice.

Ha! I remember a junior high school teacher's comment on one of my papers saying "Very erudite!". That was the first time I had ever seen erudite or erudition, and had to look it up. So I guess my point is: Back atcha Mursli! ;) BTW, I used to live down the hill from you in La Mesilla/Espanola. Great riding around those parts!

Broke my RIGHT side one, twice. BOTH times it happened while 'wearing' my BIG windshield (made from a Majesty scooter 'shield) during 'spirited-riding' on dirt roads with LOTS of washboard, and I noticed the top of the 'shield really vibrating back and forth!

First time (winter 2010-'11) I took it to be welded (see pics 2 thru 5), and figured it was fixed. Happened again last winter (2011-'12), and I really went over it with the welder. We decided to cut a small piece of aluminum to fit the INSIDE (facing the rider), about 1.5" L by .75" W in a sort-of long "V" shape, then welded that in. Look at picture 5 and note the "V" shape just below the line of 6 holes. Sorry, NO pics of that repaired, and SO FAR it's working fine, though when I did the "... 'spirited-riding' on dirt roads with LOTS of washboard..." again it was with the OEM 'shield on and I'm sure that doesn't stress the bracket the same way. :goodluck:

I'm thinking it is the bigger windscreens Eddie. I wanted the guy to weld in a reinforcing piece of aluminum like you did, and he said he would, but dropped the ball when all was said and done. We'll see how well this one holds up. Thanks for the input.
