That kind of sums up my week of commuting so far to the train for work! Monday night I was thinking that for a guy who has at least 4 or 5 encounters with deer each year I had not had one. Dam lucky I was thinking. At that moment a huge buck appeared right at the side of the road coiled to spring out in front of me. My aerostich now has a brown spot in the back. Tuesday we got those high winds and on a straight stretch of road at 65 mph a trashcan literally flying landed right in the middle of the road. I had to lock it up to avoid the dam thing. Brown spot number 2. (No pun intended). I still can’t image where the dam thing came from it was in the middle of nowhere. Last night when I got to the train station it had snowed about an inch and the wind was just crazy. Gusting well up over 40 mph. It was a 35 mph ride home and I had to put my foot down twice to keep the bike up right. I pulled in to the driveway and promptly plugged in the pickup. Today was no better weather wise but the Dodge was much better in the blowing snow and high cross winds. My 9th missed day of riding the bike for 2010:yeahsmile:

You're to be congratulated on your effort to always ride. I often think how far south I would need to move in order to ride all year long. Glad you escaped without injury.

I'm a little further north than you but I've missed nine days of riding this MONTH! Thanks to the sub-normal temperatures and frequent snowfall we've had. Way worse than usual for December. My driveway is a bobsled run and the snow and ice just won't melt because it won't get above 25 degrees.

The best year I ever had, I think, was missing 15 days riding to work in a year. It was a perverse point of pride for me to try to never miss a day, without blatantly putting myself at risk on ice or snow.

Yes, the weather here has been less than optimum...

Both Friday last week, and Monday this week my commute involved snow. Friday I had to call in the cavalry and have my Dad come pick me and the bike up. Cold temps and fresh snow don't mix well with concrete roads and bridges. Monday wasn't much better, but I was only a mile from the office by the time I had to cross some nasty interchanges. Made it in to the office, snow gone when I left.

Been caging it the last 2 days waiting on new tires. The stockers are shot with just over 11,000 miles on 'em. Also have grip wraps coming today, and a heated vest Friday. Merry Christmas to me!!!

All should be well by Monday.

Dam make that 10 missed days I drove the truck again today with more snow on the way. Snow and ice are the only things stopping me cold and rain are no problem. Really there is no such thing as bad weather just bad gear:)

A brave soul! Ice scares the crap outta me. I have never had the right gear to really tackle the cold weather, but I love the idea!

Snow is really coming down here in D.C. so I know its really dumping out in the mountains of VA where I live. Truck was the right move.

buffamazon the heated part of the gear is not that bad as far as $$$. I think I have a little over 200 invested. And its the best investment I ever made. All you need is a heated jacket liner and heated gloves. I wear a aerostich roadcrafter suit a gerbings jacket liner and gerbings heated gloves and I was fine all last year. This year I added heated grips and barkbusters with the storm guards and provided myself even more comfort. I like cold weather riding as much as I like summer riding now.

Sigh. I miss the days when I lived at 18.5 degrees north latitude and the only weather that kept me from riding was hurricanes.

This December had been brutal so far. More snow again today. :mad:

Yup, only one day of riding in this week. Crappy Mid-Atlantic states!

Just got some new bits to help in the comfort, performance areas.

Picked up some Oxford grip wraps, and a Tourmaster Heated vest. I will be wiring those up this afternoon.

For the V, I got some new shoes. Ordered a set of Avon Storm 2's. They look to be pretty nice. It's comforting to see all that tread as I have 11,000 miles on the stock set. The Dunlops aren't completely worn through, but the traction they provide is non existent. Very sketchy to say the least.

I'm also trying out Dynabeads. We'll see how that goes.

I'll get a couple pics when I'm done. She's in the basement now, getting all warmed up.

I don't ride to work when it is below freezing because I leave home in the dark and there are several churches and business on my route that are bad about leaving their sprinklers on even when it is freezing outside. I don't really mind the cold (with the right gear) but I can't see ice in the dark. I also don't ride to work in the rain...it sucks being wet at work, plus they is really no place to change out of a wet riding suit in our office.

Sprinklers in the winter? Sounds like they need to pray for some common sence! As far as rain goes that's simple. Aerostich roadcrafter suit. Easy on and off over street clothes and dry as a bone underneath.

I avoid the winter in general up here, not just because of the snow and ice but the salt/gravel that they spread on the roads. It may be a nice 40 degrees out some days in January but the gravel on the roads is just nuts....

I've not been on my bike since Friday 17 December !
The weather here on the south coast of England has been very cold. It's not been above 1 degree C for all that time. It snowed about 4 inches on the Saturday and Monday and been icy ever since. My lovely 2010 black V is tucked up in the garage blocked in by the overflow of Christmas food and drink.
I might try for a ride today as it's a balmy 5 degrees C at 7am today, but we've had no rain to wash the salt away. The bike might stay in the garage!
