I'm thinking about going from my house in Iowa, USA to Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie, Canada before coming back to America for the U.P. of Michigan and Wisconsin. What do I see along the way, and any good roads to use? I'm planning on using hotels near the great lakes when possible.

You'll LOVE the highway between Thunder Bay and the Soo. Stop and take a look at the memorial (several miles east of Thunder Bay on the water side of the highway) to Terry Fox, a heroic kid who ran from Newfoundland to near Thunder Bay after losing a leg to cancer. Here's a link:

Watch the movie One Week with Joshua Jackson, Liane Balaban, Director:Michael McGowan. It has a Norton in it and the Terry Fox memorial!

Don't miss the goose in Wawa. That's a seriously great trip, around the big lake. Getting a bit cold for this year though. This is something you're planning for next year, right?

Winnipeg is a friendly city, great restaurants, plenty to keep entertained but it is flat, and the roads are straight. Heading east you will go 20-30 km without a curve or hill. Biggest hazard is mosquitoes. Then the road will get far more challenging. The transition from prairies to Canadian Shield takes less than one hour and is impressive.

Consider spending a night in Kenora. It's a great town, that in the summer time looks like it is the background for a really fun beer commercial. Winnipeg, Minneapolis, and Chicago residents overtake this place in the summer.

Thunder Bay is a bigger city by northern standards. Its actually two cities that merged together and as a result doesn't have much of a downtown, but the Terry Fox memorial is a must.

The highway from there to the Sault St Marie is really nice.

The tip on the movie "One Week" is spot on.

I'll add, avoid night riding in Ontario as there is lots of wildlife, you can easily be 1 hour from a tow, 2 hours from a hospital. The road is good though, but a lot of undivided two lane highway.

Also, taking a side trip from Winnipeg to either Gimli, or Grand Beach, (1 hour north) for a night is well worth it if the weather is nice, especially on a weekend. (Google both)

The road from Kenora to Sioux Narrows and International Falls is nice as well as a diversion.

Most important, wait until mid June but be done before late August. Also Like Iowa, flash thunderstorms tend to hit during this time of year after supper. Ride early in the morning and all is well.
