hey guys,

did the track thing, now i want to do some dirt tracking with this thing.

i like to mount some tires that will work good for dirt roads, but will last the longest on pave roads.

i know you have to compromise when doing both, but i will still be riding lots of pavement, and don't want to wear out the dirt tires real fast.

anything more aggressive the my street tire would be great.
i'll just be flat tracking dirt roads, so i don't need any huge knobs.

i'm having fun with the street tires, but i know i'm going to loose the front end sooner then later. :)

I have read good things about the Shinko 705 tires. Never tried them myself though.

A search on "Shinko 705" should yield good results on the tire itself, and tire choices for the roughter roads in general.

Back to the same old story, just stated a little differently. These Versii are NOT "dual sport" bikes.

Solution: Buy two bikes, one for street, one for dirt.

OR.......get used to replacing dirt tires on a regular basis.

Dual sport rule #1 "You wanna play you gotta pay"

And, YES, I have two bikes, one for street (Versys), one for dirt (KLX650)
Total "IN"? About $7500 (minus farkles)

Dave - Pirelli has started offering the Scorpion Trail (which is equivalent to the Tourance) in 120/70-17 because it's one of the standard fitments on the new MultiStrada, but despite the fact that I saw someone here calim he got one, on the west coast they are unobtanium - I waited two months of "it'll be here next week" to finally give up and install Avon Storms because healdem killed what was left of my front RoadSmart in eastern OR.

This is what they look like:


They don't come in a 160/60-17, but the 150/70-17 is close enough and still works well on our 4.5" rim. I get 8-9K miles out of similar tires (Anakee, Tourance) on my V-Strom, so you should be able to see at least that kind of mileage on the Versys, if not better. The only question is whether you can find a front tire within the time frame you need it.

I have some Pirelli scorpion syncs on my Versys and find they work well on gravel and are great on the seal as well. I have covered 5000km so far and may get another 2000km out the back tyre and probably quite a bit more from the front.

The difference between them should only be 9 mm...

160/60 = 96 mm Sidewall Height
150/70 = 105 mm Sidewall Height
.

Gary's using a 130/80x17 REAR on the front of his bike, and has OVER 26,000 miles on it (Tourance). See the Heading South thread for Gary's adventures.

okay, i see these type of tires hold up great on the road, except maybe the Distanzia SM compound.

so i'm going to look for to see whats available in a stock size first if i can.
160/60 & 120/70

if anyone has good recommendations in these sizes, love to hear about them.

Traction and grip on dirt roads is improved by running lower air pressure, front and rear. I ride 25 psi f+r on gravel, Pirrelli Scorpion Sync. Great tires on pavement also, at 33 f and 36 r......Remember to be smooth and easy with your inputs. If your losing the front , your doing something wrong...Be safe and have FUN.......:yeahsmile:

you don't know what i'm doing with this. :)

i'm not just riding it down a long dirt road.

i'm fully padded with a leather road racing suit on, and the area that i'm riding in now doesn't have a straight more then 100 yards long.

when i say i'm flat tracking, i mean i have the back hang out all the way with the steering in full lock coming out of corners and the same going in.

so yes, i do have a VERY good chance i'm going to loose the front end right now on street tires. but i like living on the edge! :)

you say, ''ride safe''. i would stay home on the coach if i wanted to be safe. :)
thats why i have all the pads on. :)

I know what flat tracking is .... I pretend to be Scotty Parker every time i'm on a dirt road (yaa right). Glad to hear your geared up ..... I wear full leathers also..Supermoto racers run full slicks in the dirt sections ...so it is rider skills that they don't loose the front....I raced my Versys last sunday....with supermoto club ...I won the beginner class...no dirt section ...95 mph on the straights....NOT SAFE..BUT FUN....Cheers....Malcolm:teetertooter:

this sure is one versitile bike.

yeah your right... they do run slicks in that dirt don't they.
so i better man up on those street tires on mine. :)

i bet there a little wider then my 120/70's though. :)

A Pirelli Scorpion Synch 160/60-17 with a Pirelli Scorpion Trail 120/70-17 could work well, although they and Avon Distanzia SM tires would in fact wear relatively quickly for your application.
Continental's ContiForce SM Supermoto tire has virtually the same tread pattern as their ContiForce Sport-Touring tire. Front ContiForce actually has more grooves, especially near the middle... I think it would be your best choice. They're also very reasonably priced. "Safe in all seasons thanks to good grip in the wet. Quick warm-up phase, thanks to modern compound technology. High mileage."

yeah, thats what i'm running into, i'm going thru tires to fast.

i just took a set of the ContiForce Sport-Touring tire off, i only got 2K miles out of them.

Just put a set of Michelin Pilot Road 2's on hoping for longer life.
these tires do handle great.

but now i like to try a more aggressive tread.
sounds like those soft compounds are just want i would like, but it doesn't take me long to wear them out, and just don't want to keep spending the $.

2000 miles! Wow. Looks like there is no tire that will withstand your racing habits. More agressive treads and softer supermoto compounds work well, but inevitably wear out faster. You need to find a good sponsor to support your need for speed... My TrailAttack is relatively wide and low for a 150/70, and is wearing pretty well so far with the Distanzia 120/70.

You need to find a good sponsor to support your need for speed... My TrailAttack is relatively wide and low for a 150/70, and is wearing pretty well so far with the Distanzia 120/70.
your combo sounds good, i think i'll give them a try soon.
