Hi Owners,
I'm torn between the 650 V-Strom(ABS) and Versys.
75% of my rides are paved country roads. I would like to do some 2 days tours.
My questions,
1. Does anyone regret not getting a ABS bike.
2. Will I miss not having a center stand. I worry about break downs in the middle of nowhere.
My bike now is a 1985 Honda 450 Nighthawk.

I'd say both bikes are adept at touring, but might give a slight edge to the V-strom there. The Versys is head and shoulders above the V-strom on twisty paved roads. The V-strom is better off-road. I've never owned a vehicle with ABS so I don't miss it or regret not having it. It is a bit annoying to not have a center stand. I really like the old Nighthawks.

The V is great on pavement but a little squirrely on loose dirt with street tires.
The V is a bit lighter than the Vstrom.
Lots of aftermarket support for both.
Had a bike with ABS and don't miss it.

Have ridden both bikes before purchasing the Versys, found the wee strom a lot heavier feeling and why I brought the V was the word nimble, I mainly ride on roads with losts of twists/turns and ups/downs and the Vesrys is magic and after a year of riding it still have the same goofy smile everytime i get off the mighty V

I just went through the same delima, & well I'm here. I realize that 85 to 90% of the riding ill do will be on the tarmac. So that was where I placed my emphasis. I have a good friend with the Vstrom & he swears his gen 1 FZ1 handles better off road! I know for a fact that the Versys will hand a Vstrom its arse in the twisties. If you wanna do some off road excursions different tires will be a must on the Versys, can't speak to the ones on the Vstrom.
Do your best to ride both before you buy, & it is a buyers market right now. Get what you feel comfortable on.

The V-strom has one of the best engines ever put in a motorcycle in my opinion.....basically a retuned SV650 engine. The rest of the bike just feels a bit "blah" unfortunately.

I thought I was going to get the V-strom but the Versys was really calling me and when I when to the dealer and there they were side by side. I sat on both and the V-strom just seemed big, bulky and heavy. The V, wow light nimble just sitting on it, it just seemed to fit me and I'm a lover of V twins thats why I was thinking V-Strom. Now Im looking at at both and the V- strom just looks lethargic sitting there next to the Versys. The Versys wow kind of sexy. Mined made up I took the versys and I have to say I realy like it. I come from a major off road racing, MX back ground and My Versys in the dirt on simple fire roads it's a blast, great flat tracker love sliding it in the turns but I'm more comfortable with dirt under my wheels anyway.

V-Strom vs GS650 vs Versys...
Last sentence is the best :p

About central stand – I was riding chopper without it – its OK :p

ABS… - I have Versys 2010 ABS… - and better to have it :p

I looked at both the *V* and the Strom when I was looking and just liked the feel of the *V* better. It's lighter feeling than a Strom and I never had plans on taking it off road as the intent was for it to be a daily ride.

If 75% of your riding is going to be on the street, I would go with the Versys. If 75% is going to be off road, I might lean more towards the Strom. Both are good bikes, good selection of aftermarket parts and will serve you well.

Can't say about the ABS as never rode a bike with it before and don't think it was an option on the 2008 model here in the States.

My 2008 does not have ABS we did not get that option until the 2010 models, just curious how the ABS and non ABS would compare in a professional test?

I am true and true kawa men so cant tell anything of the Strom, but here is some feedback on your question.
1. Does anyone regret not getting a ABS bike.
Not me. ABS will not lock the brake, but stopping the bike is still in your hand or fingers.So no problem ABS or No ABS.
2. Will I miss not having a centre stand.
No , I dont miss it as have a lot of aftermarket protable carry along stand for emergency use-

Kawa is build bullet proof and doesn't breakdown if you take care of it.

Hi azmadan, how are you finding the ABS and have you ridden a non ABS to compare the difference
My last bike... Suzuki Vz800 Marauder :p was without ABS...
And only difference is when you ride on weet (when its raining…)
ABS = you are breaking almost like on dry…
No ABS = few times I have a little problems with breaking = wheel blocking = scary moments :p

its only 1000$ for ABS...

I have several hundred miles experience in a back-to-back test w a very good friend on his Wee. We switched bikes and came away with remarkably similar conclusions:

The "experience" begins when lifting each bike off it's sidestand. The V feels much lighter and is much easier to move around in your garage.

While neither seat is very good, the Wee seat is far better than the V. YMMV

The reach to the stock handlebars is way longer on the Wee. Much more comfortable on the V.

The footpegs and leg position on the V were very sportbike-like. The Wee has a more open riding posture.

I liked the Wee engine just a little bit more than the V. Just a little, mind you. This had more to do with smoothness than outright torque.

In my experience the V out-dragged the Wee every time, regardless of the rider.

The Wee felt like a large bike in it's handling response. The V felt like my dirtbike in comparison. Faster turn-in, much more flickable, MUCH more hooligan-esque.

Brakes about the same, with the slight edge to the V.

In a perfect world if I were purely touring I think the Wee would be better. In MY world of 90% local riding, once I changed the seat and the footpegs the V is perfect.

God...for a 1 liter Versys...........
