He'll know next Tuesday when he can get one in for me. With gas prices going up I don't want to trailer my bikes on every work trip. I can put the Van Van on my receiver rack with zero affect on the fuel economy, but it is limited to 55 unless pinned which I don't want to do.

Carrying the KLX300SM would be a breeze and it is capable of 70 without overwhelming the engine.

The sad part is that I would be selling the Himalayan which has taken me to amazing places with its torque and low seat height.

I figure that after the OEM tires wear out I will probably put 80 / 20 tires on it.

Loosing over 100 lbs will be nice.

KLX300 would be my ultimate off road machine. KLX300SM with 17 inch wheels....interesting idea! 300 lbs., nice.(y)
I watched many videos of the KLX300 in action and I have no plans for that type of riding anymore. Most places I went with my KLX250S I also went with my Versys 650. Just rode a little faster.
I say most, because I did do some riding in NM that was insane for me to even try alone on the KLX250S. I crossed the Tularosa Basin and climbed old jeep trails up into the Sacramento Mountains. I'm glad I accomplished it, but it was scary at the time.

I don't want to have a bike that will make me think, "I can do that" again. The body can't handle it anymore.

Well, the dealer could only get the blue one. :( Plus, no idea when it will come in. I'm back working on the Emerald Coast so I put in a search and found an Ebony and Lime Green KLX300SM about 260 miles away. Struck and deal over the phone, put down a deposit and hope to pick it up on the 12th.

I now have 2500 miles on my KLX300SM. I have ridden it in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. Elevations from sea level to 5500 feet. Roads ranging from parkways to rock gardens. (yes those rock gardens were on my GPS

). The only time I turned around was if I encountered mud.

The only time I wished for a little more power was when riding on 55 mph twisty roads with 15 mph yellow warning signs in the curves. The vehicles I would get stuck behind would go fast in the passing zones and crawl through the corners. Some would realize I was back there hovering around the yellow line and pull over to let me pass. Others would require a burst of power just as a curve ended and thankfully they didn't want to race me and let of the gas to let me go.

With the little tail pack, and my ICON Field Armor backpack, I was able to carry the essentials for a day of exploring.

A selection of photos from my trip.
