I have a question about the above mentioned side carriers from those of you who might have purchased them. The order section for the carriers on the Twisted Throttle web site lists something called a hard bolt adapter kit. What is that, and is it necessary? I'm referring to the Evo style carriers, for the years 07-10.

1.) You absolutely DO NOT need it for mounting. I have these on my '09 Versys, and everything mounts up VERY solidly with just the Quick-Locks.
2.) I believe the hard bolt kit (according to Twisted Throttle) allows you to make the side-racks PERMANENT - not quick release - or easily removable for that matter. With the EVO style hardware, you have 3 tabs that stick out a little bit on each side - along with the bracket for the turn-signal relocation kit as a 4th mounting point - that the quick-locks attach to. Loose fit EVERYTHING first so you can line everything up, "dry fit" the side racks, THEN start tightening down bolts.

I believe they have that option because the twist locks have been known to fail on a dual-sport bike that gets use off-road a lot. The jarring eventually loosens them up and you get rattles. In extreme cases they have failed. Keep in mind for street use and occasional off-road they are fine....I been using them for over a year without issue.

here is the complete kit which replaces the Quick-Lock fasteners. The Quick-Lock fasteners still come with the kit. A few people have switched back and fourth depending on the trip.

They have the same set up for the KLR and I was told that the Hard Mount Kit offered a bit more load and greater protection from a DUZ fastner failure.

That said I've hauled way more (groceries) on the KLR than I should have and never had a problem. I do try and take it very easy when doing so (no Skying the Triples for me).

I do know the 2012 V isonly rated for 10 Kilos TOTAL in the bags! 10.1 pounds each isn't very much.
