I am just curious for the future what would be a sport bike that is like the versys. I know people out there are probably comaring the versys to a sport bike. I have never owned a sport bike but may one day down the road. I mean I love the versys but might want something with a tad more power open to thoughts.

A Versys isn't a sportbike, nor like one except in that it has two wheels.

I assume you're talking about wanting something that's more comfortable and versatile (like the Versys), but more powerful. Closest thing you'll find is a sport standard like the Yamaha FZ1 or FZ6, the Aprilia Tuono, or the like.

I know it's not a sport bike but i am looking for people that might be comparing it to one. I want to know a SPORT bike that has a little more power than the versys and not something that is going to come out from under you. Not looking at another sport touring bike i love the versys.

I heard the popularity of the Versys has got the attention of the boys over at Honda and that they will soon release a bike that is similiar? Doubt it would be this year (09) but maybe something for 2010. This new half sport half dual sport, upright thing is very popular given the sucess of the Wee and the Versys so I am sure more bikes will be coming out soon. As for me I will snatch up a 09 if they ever get here!!!!!!

How about a nice '09 Ninja 650R? More like a sport bike, but extremely similar to a Versys. Maybe just a tad more horsepower too. ;)

I actually looked at some aprilia's at the local track they had a tent and were giving out info on them they look SICK.

The versys is a sportbike, your legs are tucked under your body. (it's not a standard)

The versus is better than most 600 range sportbikes on the street for 2 reasons:
1 - it's more comfortable
2 - better low range torque.

It handles as good as any sportbike I have owned or ridden. To get better handling than a versys you would have to buy a modern RR bike.

i like my harley vrod almost as much as the versys...yes...i have both...and ride them about equal. although the harley is more comfortable with the wife in tow.

Uh, yeah, that's not the sole criteria by which something is judged a sportbike. I've owned standards/sport standards my entire riding career (1994 Yamaha Seca II, 2001 Yamaha FZ1, 2006 Yamaha FZ1, 2007 Aprilia Tuono), and the Versys is definitely more standard than the last two. The Versys is not a sportbike, irrespective of what an insurance company rates it as in order to jack up your rate.

There are different comfort levels of sportbikes. I agree the ergos of one sportbike may be more aggressive than another.

However, a standard does denotes a seating position where the feet are under the knees (like sitting in a chair). The Versys does not sit like that. The pegs are rear set. Not high like most RR bikes, but like many non RR sportbikes.

As for performance? It corners as well as most non-RR bikes on the market.

It does a have a utility advantage far above most sportbikes on the market.


FWIW - my insurance doesn't classify bikes, State Farm goes strictly by engine size. An R1 is cheaper to insure than a 1500cc cruiser.
Progressive, I believe, uses bike classes. I have no clue what they consider the Versys.

To me that describes a cruiser, not a standard.

I think that we're mincing words, though. It doesn't matter what you call it, the fact is that it's more versatile than many bikes out there (whodathunk it with that name), and certainly more so than anything that most would call a sportbike.

Progressive rates

Progressive does rate the Versys as a sport bike - much to my chagrin! Here in Pa, a new one will cost me about $833 a year. ouch. Looking at a used one with 5700 miles. Hoping the ins will go down as a result!

If you want lighter weight, more power but not to much power and a sport bike frame look at a used Honda CBR600F4i. I absolutely love mine (probably more than the Versys or anything else I own). Its 370lbs dry, 110 hp on the dyno and for a 600 pulls like crazy above 6000 rpm. Its no slouch either, several rags have clocked the F4i running sub 11 second quarter miles. What’s it like? Imagine whacking the throttle on your V and where you V stops pulling 110 hp kicks in. ;) I have spent some time on my friends 600RR and I like my F4i better, more streetable power and slightly more relaxed ERGOs.
