I am in the farkling process on an 08 V recently purchased. My next project is luggage. I bought a couple of used 1550 Pelicans. I have the SW Motech top rack to mount a 52 liter? Givi Monokey box. ALU rack + adapter plate.
So I need to order the side racks for the Pelicans and would like some input on SW Motech vs Happy Trails (I believe the Happy Trails racks are compatible with the SW Motech top rack I have?) I am leaning toward the Happy Trails with the Puck system for attaching them. I need to get the order placed and gitter done for a winter road trip! ASARP....

42,000 miles with the SW-Motech racks (top's and sides). No issues, no complaints.

Lots of case mounting options. I went from Givi 21's to the Trax cases with just some adapter swaps, the racks are the originals I bought in October 2008.

Well I think I've already screwed it up. The top rack has come in, not installed. As I was getting ready to order the side racks from SW Motech, I read that I can't have both the top rack and the side racks mounted at the same time. That wont work for touring. Maybe the HT side racks wont interfere with the SW Motech top rack??

You have NOT screwed up! You can mount them both!! You may need longer bolts. MotoPsyco has photos of how he stacked the rear mount on top of the side mounts. I dont have time to search the forum at the moment (heading out the door). Maybe he can link to how he did it.

I have the SW Motech top rack and if I ever decide to add the sides, SW will be my choice.

SW Motech likely states this for liability reasons as to not load up the rear end with too much weight. :thumb:

Thanks Captn, maybe I can have it both ways?:D
I've wondered about the rear loading, heard it makes a "wheelie" more likely.
I prefer to keep the front in contact with the road. I can pack a lot of crap in the Givi box. So I guess I will go ahead and order the side racks (EVO) and look forward to the wrenching. I may call Twister Trottle tomorrow and discuss it with em.
Next up, raise front fender and possibly a lowering kit.......yum!

My setup in the picture is for a 2008 Versys:

SW-MOTECH Quicklock fastners
SW-MOTECH EVO Carrier
SW-MOTECH Alu-Rack Toprack
SW-MOTECH Alu-Rack adapter

For the 2008, no extra hardware was needed.

And I haven't wheelie'd it yet.

2010+ years are different.

Don't waste your time. I have already been down that road when I was debating side racks for mine. They stick to the story it can't be done. They are likely covering their butts in the same way SW MOtech is (Can't blame them).

There are too many people here that have mounted them both for me to have any concerns. Keep us posted and take some pics! I just may have to add racks to mine someday!

OK, I'm in order mode. Thinking I will order HT Puck system for attaching the pelicans to the SWM racks unless anyone has better advice ?

Hey olegeezer,

Just to make things more difficult, there's an alternative to the HT system for mounting pelicans - Caribou cases. Roger sells the mounting kits based on the racks you're using, and I've yet to see anyone complain about his customer service. I have a set of 1550s on my 2011, mounted to the Hepco & Becker racks instead of the SW Motech ones, but he does mounts for both.

Given you've got your own cases, you'll want to go down the DIY mounting route most likely (cheaper, but means drilling your own holes in the cases which I guess you don't mind).

Thanks VKraken, I've already ordered the Pucks.
Do you have any advice on how to position the 1550s? Like parallel to the ground vs tilted in line with the seat surface? When I get home I guess I can fix them in a certain postion (pre-drill step) and see for myself.

Mine are parallel to the ground, which I think is just fine - I don't think tilting them will help overmuch with wind resistance, and it'll be easier to load/unload them if they're nominally "flat". You can also always knock up something similar to the caribou lanyards (essentially a couple of strings bolted to the case to keep the doors from opening all the way when on the bike itself)

I am leaning toward setting the pelicans on the slope of the seat. I plan to car a bag with camping gear behind me and in front of the Givi box. I am waiting on the HT pucks to put on the Pelicans. The SW Motech top rack and side racks mated up well and I think I will be pleased with them.
