Ok gents and ladies question for ya'll who have the Scorpion Trails from Pirelli. What PSI are you running.

Did a tire pressure check this morning and the front is at 34 and the rear is at 40. I know my old stocks were running 32 front and 36 rear. This seems a bit high from the past to me.

That's what I run in mine. Maybe a couple of pounds less out back for solo riding, no gear. 22 for off-pavement, I pack a 12v compressor.

Tire pressure should be the same as recommend (32/36). You'll get improved traction and ride by airing them down below this a few PSI but probably increase the wear rate. Tire pressures are normally measured with the tire cold.

So the rear is over aired then. I will deflate a bit. I thought 32/36 was the correct pressure.
You can tweak the tire pressure to what feels best to you. The Kawasaki recommended pressure of 32/36 does not take into account a 220 lbs rider before full gear, as in my case, so I run a few psi higher.

Your Versys will probably, maybe, not explode into a ball a flames if you have a few psi more or less than 32/36.

On Kawasaki recommended numbers: Do you really shift into 6th gear at the recommended 34 mph?

True true.

Just felt a little sketchy yesterday like it was skipping on the front. I'm thinking the front might need a little more actually. I'll play with the tire pressure later tonight and do some runs so I can dial it in. I think I'll start with the recommended PSI and go from there.

Oh and Pret yep the end fits the valve. I got the little device on sale. Takes forever to pump but it works.

Bringing this back...

I'm bringing this back because I have Scorpion Trails and I'm a bit confused. The stated max pressure on the tire is 42psi for the front and the rear. The dealer inflates them to 42 psi. I ride here in the cool, wet NW and so I am very sensitive to wet weather traction.

This thread has spoken about the recommended pressures on the swing arm of the bike, which I think is 32 front and 36 rear. But isn't that for the stock tires? Why would I run that in the Scorpion which states 42 for both?

I get the trade off between wear and grip and deforming and all that, I am just curious what other folks are doing about the different rating on the tire vs. the frame.

If I remember correctly, all my rides in the past had a recommended psi of 32-36 front and 36-40 rear. That being said, I believe most of the tires had a MAX psi of 40-42 or so. My Shinko 009's have a MAX psi of 42, but I run them close to the specs on the swingarm.

My understanding is that the maximum psi on the sidewall of the tire is exactly that. If your running at the maximum GVWR than you can go as high as the maximum of the tire, assuming you are within the load rating of that tire.

Again this is just my understanding of it and how I run my tires. You will usually know when the front is running too low. I used to have to run my sportster front 4 psi above the recommended (32 psi), yet it was still 4 psi below the MAX of the tire (40 psi). Otherwise I would have a headshake accelerating through curves. And that was the factory tire.

I sold my Versys and got a Tiger XC and it has the same tires. Just use the manufacturers recommended pressure - it's the same spec of tire, just a different brand and pattern.

IMO 30 may be low, but maybe it would improve grip. Just watch for temperature - put your hand on it after some hiway miles and make sure it's not overheating.

The sidewall spec is max allowed for the tire for max load carrying. You're no where near the max load so you don't need max pressure. Will make the tires feel pretty hard.

Just fyi, the XC factory spec is 42r 36f . Has a 21" front tire, same size rear.

Good points on it being the max allowed pressure. I have dropped the pressure in both tires to 36. I've worried enough that the Scorpion may not have quite the wet traction that the PR3 does, and I don't need to make it worse by having an unnecessarily high tire pressure. I don't want to initially drop below 36 until I ride it tomorrow. I know on bicycles that lower pressure adds to grip to a point, but then the tire gets squishy and you lose stability.

I have run 36F and 42R in both my Vs since new, and in my '04 KLR during the overlap till I sold it. This was suggested by the dealer's mechanic when I asked him.

I have scraped the 'peg feelers several times at those pressures, and got VG mileage out of the OEM Dunlops, ContiMotions, Tourances, etc, and I have NEVER "aired-down" for dirt.

(Seems to me that jdrocks pretty much does the same, but I can't say how HIS mileage is - he weighs a 'little' more than I do....)
