Hey everyone, I recently became the new owner of a 2008 Versys. The previous owner set the bike up with some pretty nice modifications including a Penske 8900 series rear shock.

I'm 6' tall and maybe 170lbs in full gear and I'd like to setup the suspension more for my size and riding style.

In addition to the Penske Shock he installed a HyperCo rear spring.
Based on these pictures would you all agree that the Spring Rate is 1300#? If so, isn't this a bit extreme for me?




Lastly does anyone know the Stock Rear Spring Rate?

I've seen sources saying between 900-1000#; I have the stock rear spring, and just wanted some confirmation on my assumptions before I proceed.

The Penske shock has not been a popular mod for this bike, at least on this forum. Over at SV Riders they're all about 'em though. Check the rear sag on the bike. Google that if you'd like a step-by-step. Then you will know if that spring will work for you. If you need to swap it out get a recommendation from a Penske dealer.
I think you might be close on the stocker. But if "before I proceed" you mean install the stock spring in your after-market shock, that seems like a mistake. The suspension guy told me that the V was under-sprung, but had a lot of pre-load on the spring, even at the lowest setting. That's why it was harsh over small stuff but would plunge through the stroke on big hits.

That does look like it's a 1300 lb/in spring... Stock is said to be 940.

At 210 lbs plus gear, I really like my 800 lb/in (14.3 kg/mm) spring. It's way more compliant, with enough support for charging in extreme road conditions... It's just perfect, and allows use of all the rear suspension's travel.

Your Penske 8900 series shock takes a 2.25" ID spring, either 6 or 7 inches long. It's very easy to replace the spring, without any special tools.

At your weight, I'd try a 750 lb/in (13.4 kg/mm) spring. Just measure your spring first to confirm that it is 6 inches free-length... It should be about 5.75" installed.

My new Progressive is 900#/in and may still be a little shy of what I need. That shock looks real similar to the Progressive. If that would fit mine, I might be in the market for your old spring: but I'm not sure how I would compare compatibility or get crossover part numbers for the different companies. Since we have different models, I may need the custom hyperpro spring ordered off ebay.

Yeah, your spring is for a 280 to 300 lb rider, lol.

if you never plan on riding 2-up then you can set the bike up on the light side of the range. just remember that you have very little shock travel on this bike. if you do ride two up on a 700lb spring, it could be very unstable

also the picture you provided seems to show even less free shock travel (without hitting bottom out bumper) than stock. maybe why they put such a stiff spring on it. the stock spring at around 1000# is a nice compromise for both single rider and 2up.

That bump stop is pretty thick, depending on its durometer (hardness). If it is pretty hard, it could be cut down thinner... The 940 lb/in stock spring is way too stiff to allow setting proper sag, and for sufficient compliance with 210 lb rider.

For solo riding 170 lbs fully geared, a 750 lb/in (13.4 kg/mm) spring would offer more than enough support, as many have opted for with their R1 and Elka shock... If you plan to do much 2-up with a 127 lb passenger and gear, 900 lb/in would work well, but ride would be harsh when unloaded.

Awesome thanks for all the great feedback guys. I've been really busy and then had family in town; hence the slow/no response.

The shock travel is less than normal in the picture because I had the all the preload basically removed when i took the picture so that i could spin the coil around to see the labeling.

Based on the input above, I am going to take some measurements and see if the stock spring will work. I will continue to update this thread as I progress. Thanks again for all the feedback; any additional tips or insights are definitely welcome!

another opinion

If someone put a 1300# spring on there, I hope they were a professional wrestler or a hulk of some sort.
I've run a 1050 for a short time. Elka made a mistake and initially sent the wrong spring and it was harsh. I ran a 950 for quite a while and it was fine for fast riding and a bit stiff on the potholed roads. Went to a 900 and found it was the best compromise for street and spirited backroads. Now I just ride the lazy backroads. I'm at an 850 and it's super plush. I would not go any lighter and don't ride 2 up.
I'm 190# will all gear on.

As a brief update:

I have since switched back to the Stock Rear Setup; which for my weight is much better. I Figure I'll ride it like this for a while, and then at some point I can setup the Penske shock for my weight and riding style.

Plus maybe at that point i'll notice and appreciate the upgrade...
