When replacing the coolant the service manual says to use 50% coolant and 50% "soft" or distilled water and that's what I plan to do next weekend, but I wanted to see if anyone is using 60/40? There is a Canadian YouTube video where a guy recommends it. Just curious and not saying that I approve of it.

Bale - I don't see any advantage to doing a 60/40% mixture. From working in a gas station as a young fellow, I remember that 50/50% is good for -40F (or C - YOUR choice:smile2:), and I do NOT ride at THAT TEMP (...and my V would be in the garage).

If the bike is stored in an unheated shed and you live in central or especially northern MN I would go the 60/40 route.

My old and feeble brain remembers a 50/50 mix as being -34F, also from the gas station days.

I worked on dry air coolers for large inverters in our Canadian climate, we did have days that went to -35, 50/50 becomes close to slush , the main thing you need to worry about is expansion and the cooling tubing failing.

There is no advantage to going 60/40, I have included several links,increasing % of glycol reduces heat transfer, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol both release the oxygen in the H2O , using premix has advantages of being distilled water and already releasing the oxygen. Never mix in a ferrous metal container and never store in a metal container, in less than a week you will have chocolate brown glycol. Most mixes are designed for use in aluminum, make sure you purchase the correct type. Glycol is not a very good heat transfer medium, increasing to 60/40 will reduce the heat transfer. At minus 35, ( C&F meet at -35), 50/50 will turn to slush, if you are in a area that goes down to -50, you may want to go with 60/40, or store in a warmer climate.
Please note to use either distilled water or de-ionized water when mixing.
