I guess I'll post here as the other forums are disabled. :)

I'm looking at picking up an '09 and have a few quick questions.

1) This '09 has less than 500 miles on it. How well do these bikes handle lots of sitting time like this and are there any issues I need to look for during inspection?
2) Price of the bike is $5k, 2009 and very clean with less than 500 miles and has a few saddle bags included but nothing major. Sound like a fair price?

A little about me in case it matters. I'm 6' and rode a VTX for years to work and back, just wasn't too comfortable on it so finally sold it. I've got a new job now that's putting considerable mileage on my truck so I'm looking at the Versys as a commuter bike to drag me back and forth. I've not ridden one but I would expect it to be smoother than my VTX and probably more comfortable with the upright position as well.

edit: Looking at the Classifieds here I see a bike for $2,500 in Colorado. Now that seems like a darn fine deal but he's got a couple people already looking at it. Wow.

You should offer $4000 max. Change the fluids, check all the connections, check the battery. The bike is very dependable and should run like a champ. Don't forget to play the "I also have to replace the tire game with the seller." :) those tires have a flat spot from sitting too long :goodluck:

Dump the old gas.

Got my "improved" '10 for less than that, you can do better on the price. Always keep in mind that just because they add saddle bags, doesn't increase the bikes worth.

Thx for the tips.

I'm in TX and not opposed to a fly & buy at all or ship, whichever is cheaper, if it saves me a few bucks. On the phone this guy said he was firm on the price but I'm sure there's a bit of wiggle.

If he won't come down in the price, another V will come along at a more resonable price. It's not like they're scarce or anything.

I paid 5000$CDN last summer for a 2011 with 4000km on it. Keep in mind that the minute you leave the dealership, regardless of the mileage your bike is 4 years old, so when you sell it, you'll get money for a 2009. If you can get a more recent bike with slightly more mileage I'd go for that. Also there was quite a few updates in 2010.

I agree with Kawa007. It's 4 model years old, and it's largely irrelevant that it has only 500 miles on the clock. It's not an antique or a classic or rare; it's a mass produced Japanese motorcycle that we owners love but it isn't unique or exclusive.

According to kbb.com/motorcycle the trade in value for an 09 is $3425 and suggested retail in excellent condition is $4720 so there's a decent range with which to bargain. $5K is too much in my opinion; the various bags don't add to the value at all. Bottom line is it's not the only V on the market. As weljo suggested, check craiglist for Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and so forth, plus cycletrader.

If the KBB info isn't successful with your current seller, here's another lead. Woods Cycle Country in New Braunfels (between San Antonio and Austin) has a blue 09 Versys with 1275 miles they've listed at $3999. I've seen it and it's in very good condition though I don't recall any extras. That's a much better price, if you like blue. Good luck.

PS/ Does Screaming Potato make for a loud couch??:D:D

Yes it keeps others off the couch. :D

I checked Woods but somehow missed the $3,999 deal.

Thx for all the info. This guy's ad is pretty fresh so I'm going to let it sit for a week or two and then hit him up again. Appreciate all the advise.

First-time poster here, glad to join, so much reading to do! :)

I'm also looking to purchase a Versys. Not sure if I should go new or used but there's an '09 here in the San Jose, CA area that I've seen with less than 2K miles on it, so I'm looking hard at it.

Can somebody please tell me what changes were made in '10 so I can make a decision about whether to get the '09, or wait for a '10+ to become available.

Thanks.

As i understand... about the most significant difference other than a bit of bodywork and a different muffler is the fact that the engine mounts were modified with rubber and the 10's and on up have a tad less engine vibration.

The muffler change is ONLY a different shaped piece covering the 'tail-pipe' (and apparently better mirrors...).
