Power Outlet Install

850 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Doug Just Doug
The previous owner had installed the Kawasaki gear indicator and relay. I wanted a power outlet that would fit in the clutch side hole and I found a $6 outlet on Amazon and installed it but the power plug from my GPS fits kind of loose in it. Has anyone done something similar and been able to tighten this up? Is the factory outlet tighter?

I have the factory "cigarette lighter" outlet on mine. I use a low profile USB insert in it that is snug. Sounds like you may have issues with one or both pieces. I'd try switching to a lower profile insert. If that is still loose you may have to spend more $ to get a better quality outlet

I put one of these on my bike. Can plug in two items, and charge both while I listen to music, and run gps,
I've seen similar items on Amazon, I would have gone with something like that but previous owner spent the outrageous $ for the factory one

Yeah the factory one is expensive. I have a spare if anyone wants to buy it.

Sounds like you got what you paid for. I bought one on amazon that was marketed toward boats, meaning that it had a rubber cap to make it water resistant. Mine was about $20 and works great. Still a lot cheaper than an OEM one.

Yep - definitely got my $6.00 worth. Going to ride tomorrow after wrapping it with Gorilla Tape to tighten it and see if it stays connected.

Is this the one that Kawasaki calls "DC power outlet" and sells it for $107.95? Wow. And they say you also need the relay kit for $23.95. I thought I would be interested, but I'm sure any price I would be willing to pay is disrespectful, considering the cost of a new one.
Nope Nope. The tall GPS “cigarette lighter” plug interferes with the left hand guard when turning the handlebars to the right. I’ve ordered a similarly installed USB outlet. Now with that I‘ll need a power cable preferably with a 90 degree USB male plug that doesn’t send the GPS into data mode. Heavy sigh.
I have the factory 12V outlet. I'm using a flush-mount dual USB adapter in it (I have a rubber dummy plug currently in the unused slot), and am powering my Garmin XT GPS using this coiled cable with 90-degree plugs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L7R8YMD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The GPS sits on a SW-M mount over the clocks. There is no interference with anything, and it hasn't been affected by rain (although the set-up isn't strictly waterproof.)

My two V650s have the 12v outlet 'kit' from Cycle Gear, that I bought for around $12 apiece, way-back-when.

Never has yet. It's been working properly and glitch-free since I set it up a year or so ago.
