I am currently on an 02 Bandit 1200S. Got it in March of 08 with 5400 miles on it. After a bit of riding she is now over 96,000 and I have decided to look for something a bit newer. The wife has lost interest in riding (hip/back issues) and to keep the purchase price down I am looking as at smaller bikes now unless I happen across a newer, low mile Bandit that is. I know that that bikes I am looking at will be a BIG step down in in sheer fun as related to the engine but I can live with that provided there is some liveliness to the engine. The Bandit engine is darn near perfect for an all around use bike.

My consideration list started with the following; Versys 650, V-Strom 650, SV-650, NC 700/750 and an F800GT (really good deal from a friend).have only test ridden the SV and NC so far.

Found the SV engine to be a gem but the bike was very uncomfortable for me.

The NC, would make a very good city commuter bike, but the engine (to me at least) is awful for a motorcycle. This is because it is a such a low RPM engine. Ridden in a commuter fashion it is ok, but once you head out for a fun ride, you hit the rev limiter right where other engines move into the "fun" zone.

The F800 did not make the cut as the belt is a BMW only item at $500 a pop and only rated for 24K although it seems common to get 30-32K out of them. I get 35K (use a Scottoiler and run it on the loose side of spec) out a chain sprocket set and replace them for about 1/3 the cost of the belt.

So, I am down to the Versys 650 and V-Strom 650, neither of which I have had a chance to ride but am doing more looking into them until I can.

I've had both a (2007) Strom 650 and a 2015 Versys, and don't ask me why, but the Versys feels like it's a lot more fun to ride. I guess it's just a matter of taste, but I got rid of my Strom with 3500 miles on it, and I'm up to almost 16K on my V that I bought in August 2016.

I have friends that will own / ride nothing but I-4 engine bikes. For me, I-4 engines need to be in the 1200 - 1400 cc range to give me the low end grunt that I like.

I prefer all configurations of twin cylinder engines over I-4 engines.


I would add the FZ-07, FZ-09, FJ-09 to your list of bikes to try. If you watch videos on these bikes you will see that they are all wheelie monsters if that is what you are into. That translates to a fun engine even if you don't want to wheelie.

The Strom has about 6" longer wheelbase which makes it rather 'ponderous' in comparison w/ the Versys.

I had an '03 B1200S before my first V. IMHO - the V is way more fun on twisty roads, w/ LOTS of roll-on torque, while not tempting me to "pin the throttle" as the B12 did and quickly getting into "go to jail" speeds.

I rode a friend's Wee Strom before I bought my '08 Versys and am convinced I made the right choice. The V is more nimble, and for me more comfortable. I'm not much of an off road rider (at least not intentionally) so I don't miss the Strom's 19 inch front wheel at all. Nor do I fuss about the gyroscopic precession of a 19 inch wheel.

And what's more. with the Versys's (that doesn't look right) underslung muffler, as opposed to the Strom's angled stove pipe exhaust, I have the same amount of space in both left and right hard cases (Givi V35 bags). With hard cases mounted on both bikes, the Versys is a few inches narrower than the Strom as well, meaning you don't have to ride down the center of the road to avoid knocking over joggers on the shoulder! Oh wait, I just noticed this may- just may - sound a bit biased. Disclaimer: Batteries not included, your results may vary, do not use an electric blanket in the bath tub.

Wee strom would be my ADV bike of choice over the Versys.

Versys is great at nothing, but good at everything. More speed runs in the canyons when traveling for 2 hours to get there kind of good!

I recently replaced my Versys with a VFR! Great because I'm more of a sporty rider anyways.

SV650 would be most sporty IMO. NC700 is the most comfortable.
