This Versys is the first bike I've had in quite some time that I did not put aftermarket exhaust on and after doing a lot of commuting to work through the hart of Minneapolis I've decided that loud pipes do get people's attention. Almost every day I ride to work I have at lest one incident where somebody doesn't see me and it never happened that often before. Last week I had car full of people try to merge into me and I was laying on the horn and not one of them turned to look, that was the last straw I ordered a sound bomb horn I don't want loud pipes anymore.

I prefer something between factory exhaust and straight pipes. Right in the middle.

Maybe a nice set of Vance & Hines, with the "quiet baffles". Certainly not quiet.

Our Versys has the bone stock exhaust.

I think that my Sound Bomb is plenty loud enough to get most of the cagers attention.

Part of me does want louder exhaust on occasion but that part of me is overridden by the other 95% of me most of the time. I know my neighbors appreciate my stock pipe everyday when I leave for work before sunrise. I also think that there is something to be said for not drawing attention to ones self especially when the posted limit becomes more of a guideline.

I know a guy with a old car. He has a switch on the dash board that controls a couple of solenoids connected to a couple of 3" bypass valves. In the O-F-F position you would think he is on his way to Sunday school. Flip the switch to O-N position and mash on the accelerator... well... you get the idea. If they made one of those setups for the Versys I'd definitely bolt one on mine.

I find the 'flatulatto' of an open pipe Harley extremely obnoxious and a bad rap for all motorcyclists. It is not even a pleasant note. I must admit that I can enjoy the howl of a 4 cylinder engine at times. In the distance, out of towns and cities, winding through the gears.
(Flatulatto is my own term for that noise. You're welcome, pass it on. Although I doubt the knuckle-draggers will get the meaning.) :wink2:

If I had $600 to spend on bike it would probably go toward custom shock vs exhaust. The custom shock would probably add more speed too.

The cost/benifit of a custom exhaust is bad. That said I like the underbody unit from Leo Vince SBK. It's the only aftermarket exhaust specifically designed for underbody applications.

An aftermarket exhaust does not add power UNLESS you combine it with something like a Power Commander to adjust the fuel map to suit it's different characteristics. This in turn would require some dyno tuning or a fuel map designed for the exhaust installed. The problem with this is the total cost would put it in a price category of a more powerful bike like the FJ09 and it would still not have the power of the Yamaha FJ09. Dollars spent vs benefit gained ratio is poor unless you are the type of person who gets huge enjoyment from this kind of tweaking. Another factor unique to under body exhaust bikes like the Versys is that any weight savings with an aftermarket exhaust are not going to be noticeable riding the bike.

A good adjustment/tuning of the stock suspension, or theoretically some properly adjusted improvements to it, allow you to ride faster in the corners. See the suspension tweaking thread. I've found firming up the front and back (for my weight) has made the bike feel a lot more planted and secure feeling in corners. In reality I think the Versys comes with better suspension than it's two direct competitors, the Yamaha 07 Tracer and Suzuki Strom. If I had $1500 of play money though to spend on bike, and getting something else was not an option, I might consider upgrading the forks and rear shock though, certainly before tweaking the exhaust or fueling.

for me. there is differing opinions of loud. I know some of the sportier twins like Ducatis and KTMs, sound very good IMHO with Performance pipes on..My Buell had a Drummer and I liked the way it sounded. it was deep and throaty, like a nice V8, but not really loud. So I guess in short I like nice deep throaty sounding pipes, not loud and raspy pipes.. seems smaller bore bikes tend to get the loud and raspy pipes. It's been my opinion however that none of them actually save lives..

I just got back from a weekend in the Smokies close to Ashville and Maggie Valley, and saw hundreds and hundreds of HD's. And yea, saw 2 Goldwings, a connie, a BMW, 1 older Honda and some Slingshots and Canams for the none biker bikers. I'm still hearing those pipes in my dreams.

I live on a very rural section of old Route 66 and we get substantial motorcycle traffic, and much of that is groups of bikes.

I prefer deep bass sounds to screaming high pitched sounds. I nicely tuned V8 exhaust, a nicely tuned Harley big engine exhaust. The 600cc SS bikes and the 180 degree crank 650 and smaller bikes are obnoxious sounding. 270 degree crank parallel twins sound pretty nice.

Dirt bikes and other thumper bikes are obnoxious as well.

i am okay with loud pipes as long as they are within 84dbs....which is save for human hearings and i need others to know my presence....including animals.

hmmm, yeah, loud ( but legal ;>) pipes on my Harley Dyna piss off everyone. But certainly do get more attention from most cagers then the X300. Its like Im frickin invisible and silent on the versys; bought the new Bell XP adventure helmet in the orange just to get a little more "noticabilty" for commuting- seems to work ok, less lane invasions when riding the X300 wearing it. That ****e almost never happens when Im riding the Dyna, peeps seem to be much more aware of my presence on the Dyna- its black and way shorter then the Versys, so go figure, and less willing when they do notice me, to do anything to piss me off. Not that stuff still doesnt happen, just not near as frequently. And no I dont rely on anything but awareness and quickness to survive a commute, regardless of how loud exhaust or color of gear is

My 2009 650 Versys came with an aftermarket exhaust - a Leo Vince SBK. I came from a Ninja 250 with stock exhaust, and did not notice the aftermarket exhaust on the Versys at first, it seemed stock to me. Now I realize that it is perhaps a bit louder than the stock can, but has a very pleasant note to it. I do not like straight pipes, just annoying sounding, but I do get the "being heard" argument. I just bought a day-glo yellow t-shirt to wear riding in Florida...

Weeeelllll.....I had loud obnoxious pipes on my Royal Enfield. This was when I was way younger. Now, I curse loud pipes - makes me really, really irritated. And I can think how it irritates many other people - neighbours, cagers. And to be honest, it doesn't add anything of value to us motorcyclists - we get a bad name from loud pipes. And I think we need all the support we can get - the motorcycle industry isn't doing all that well etc etc.

I personally do not like loud pipes but I also have a hearing problem. Even though I have hearing loss it is also made worse by loud noises. I had a Harley 883 once and it had the stock pipes, and it really sounded nice and I was also much younger, but I wouldn't want those pipes now. I love the sound of most stock Harley's but I'm just at that age where I like things nice and quiet. I have also worn ear plugs for years due to my kind of hearing problems.
