Does anyone else get **** for riding a versys from time to time?

Yesterday I went to eat a place that you can ride your bike too. I sometimes go with a group that mainly rides sport bikes but the majority of the people there are harley riders who are older and laid back.

Well I pull up on my versys and park and over hear a 25 something guy in the stereotypical cut of sleeves, jeans, and bandanna cracking jokes to his friends. He realizes I hear him and is all "what the hell is that crap." So I reply back "Something that will outrun yours" as a way to respond. He then all jumps up and is yelling "you want to fight!"

What the hell? A harley sportster isn't fast and who cares if I dont drive something that is useless 70% of the year.

We have a BMW-fanatic crowd in germany, so sometimes people look down on you for riding a japanese bike. And then there are the older bikers, who just hate anything with a fairing on it and electronics in gerneral. Yeah, whatever: You ride, it has to please you and no one else. I just ignore that kinda crap.

Historically my response has been, "I didn't buy my ride to make you happy, I bought it to make me happy and it does that in spades." then I tell them to ride safe and move on.

...Clearly the Harley rider in question was suffering from 'Very Small Penis Syndrome' or even worse...Penis envy!

Never caught any guff from the Harley crowd but the BMWers somehow need to justify their existence. Got a friend, Bob, who rode BMWs for over forty years, everywhere in the US, most of Europe and who knows where else. He's got more $$ in his riding gear than I have in my 401K. He now rides a V-Strom but loves the V as well. He thinks BMWs have morphed into a technological and maintenance nightmare.

I've heard it from that crowd. I simply reply "I really take offense to being insulted by a man who wears ass less leather pants". Then I ask him what's up with "tassels" and riding around looking like pirates? They never have a response and am happy when I finally leave.

I've used it a few times. The first was when a fellow construction worker commented on me riding my scooter (Yamaha Majesty 400) to work. I embarrassed him in front of a dozen men. He wanted to come across the table. Red in the face he got. Believe it or not, they are sensitive about their chaps. He couldn't explain the tassels either.:D

I've never gotten **** about the Versys, mostly I get "What is that?"

Last summer I was riding my ST1300 back into town. I came over the bridge and pulled up to make a right on the main road. A couple on a Harley ended up next to me waiting to make a left. The woman said something to the guy driving the bike and laughed, then she called out to me, "Hey, nice scooter." I replied, "Thanks. Nice tractor." The woman's smile evaporated and she turned away with nothing to say. The guy started laughing hysterically and gave me a sort of salute, which I interpreted as "Touche."

In my experience the kind of person who gives you **** would do so regardless of what they're riding. Idiots come in lots of flavors.

maybe you guys should just ride in philly, everyone here just gawks at it and asks what it is and how much fun it is to ride.

I used to get that half laugh/half nod when i rode up on my 82 xj650, cause they knew that my riding gear was worth more than my ride.

If you really wanna get a rise, say something about chaps being popular with the guys that hang out at gay bars, because they're always ready for "action". :D

They're wannabees and posers who want to emulate REAL bikers, who are those wh fly rocker patches and ARE bad asses, and don't hang out at Starbucks.

My only real complaint is that they clog up the roads at 10 under the speed limit and make it impossible to pass them.

No one has ever said anything to me. I have no tattoos, look like a geek and my stare goes through thick-rimmed plastic glasses.

And your point is what? Do you wear a Pirate Costume and hang out with others who do? I know people who tour on H-Ds, wear sensible clothing and associate with Gold wing riders. They are accepted just like everyone else. And they don't pretend that those who don't ride Harleys are inferior. True motorcyclists are egalitarian. They don't play the brand game. I've owned Harleys and Indians, as well as German and Italian and British brands. What one rides matters not to me. Attitude and the company one keeps does.
