Ok, so I've now got 5,460 miles on '09 Versys that I bought May 25th, 2012. Had the oil changed at 600 miles, since then I've changed it four times. Nov. of '12 I changed it before winter, even though I still rode it another 600 miles over the winter. Then June of '13 I changed it, rode all summer, then changed it again in Oct. Only rode it maybe 200 miles between Oct. and this past Mem. weekend when I changed it again. Friend says overkill, 5 changes in less than 6K miles. I say I'm being cautious since the bike sits most of the winter, plus when I do ride, it's primarily to/from work, about 30 miles rnd trip.

That's a little much. But it's your ride, whatever pleases you. I would have done it at 600, then I like to change it every 2,500 miles after that. I currently run amsoil 10w40 motorcycle oil. But again, whatever floats your boat.

After the first 500 I've done the oil every 3,000klms. Going on 87,000klms now and not a hiccup.

This is my philosophy for a Versys (2 quart capacity)
Did I mention that it only has a two quart capacity?

3,000 mile oil changes during normal operation
2,000 mile oil changes if you do a lot of short trips
1,500 mile oil changes if you do a lot of short trips in cold weather.

P. S. > If you're a crazy Ben Spies wannabe, then you'll need to adjust your oil change intervals accordingly.

FWIW, the manual suggests every year or every 7500 miles (after the 600 mile change), which ever comes first. Sounds like a long interval, but apparently that's all that's needed.

I use good quality synthetic motorcycle oil, Amsoil 10W-40 motorcycle oil currently, and change it once a year (in the fall just before storage) or at 7500 miles. I also use a good quality filter. A 30 mile commute is easy duty on an engine. High duty is short trips and low speeds.

IMO other engine maintenance like valve adjusts and throttle body sync, spark plug changes, air cleaner cleaning, cable lubing, etc. will pay bigger dividends with respect to longevity.

Just for conversation sake, this is a 2007 Hayabusa with approx 60K miles. Replaced a transmission gear and shifting fork, which is a common problem on this model.

3k oil change intervals with filter change at 6k. Rotella conventional 15W-40. Commuter bike 10 miles each way, anytime temps above freezing. Occasional trips in excess of 100 miles. No track time, but occasionally ran hard. (can't let them pesky 600cc bikes think they're fast) ;)

Where was I? Oh yes, it's very clean in there, don't you think?

Changed oil and filter at 600 miles. Switched from Kawasaki's dino oil to Mobil full syn. 4T motorcycle oil at 3000 miles. Follow Kawasaki's recommendations of filter and oil change every 7500 miles or yearly whichever comes first thereafter. Oil seems to be holding up well (no lab. test just finger feel) and in my case the shift quality remains good. I don't seem to have the shift problems some report, in fact I would say it has one of the better gearboxes of any of the motorcycle I have owned.

Doing more regular oil changes will NOT ever hurt your engine/gearbox - it will only hurt you wallet as it is costing you more.

Doing Less oil changed than recommended CAN hurt your engine!!! Hence why every year or every X Km/Miles.
Old Oil can be acidic, contain water vapour and rust corrode your engine internals. Old oil can also thicken, shear, breakdown and clump. If it thickens and clumps then you block the oil passageways and oil filter. If it shears and breaksdown then it is not doing it's job and lubricating and you will get engine wear.

Some people do oil analysis to stretch or push the limits of the oil before changing.

It certainly won't hurt to change it frequently. With a capacity of only 2 qts, an oil change is cheap on the Versys. For my first oil change, I had to read the manual twice and then checked the level three times because I couldn't believe it only has 2 qts of oil.

I'm used to much more expensive oil changes. 4 for the engine plus another qt in the primary and a little less than a qt in the tranny. My BMW uses 5 qts and I believe the Triumph is 3 qts.

I tend to follow what the owners manual recommends. They have engineers and have to warranty failures so if they say 7500, they're probably being conservative.

I say that if you feel better changing it more often, do it.

I'm with you, mtcycle. The engineers designed a superlative engine and they know the engine better than anyone else. They say 7,500 miles and I take their word for it.

Sometimes the marketing guys make those decisions, not the engineers. I change oil and filter at 3,000 miles based on second hand used oil analysis.

The oil I use is Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic, and change it yearly, always been under 3500 miles. Last year only rode about 1400 miles, so have not yet changed oil this year.

When bike was brand new I changed oil at 50 miles, 300 miles, then somewhat above 600 miles went with the synthetic.

You are not hurting it by changing the oil more regularly. I like to change my oil at 2000- 2500. Full synth and a new filter every time. Some people thing that is overkill but I like to make sure my baby is running like a top. Also I believe that if you look after your gear it will look after you.

However I went to a car meet with a bunch of friends last weekend and was constantly trying to play catch up with tuned Audi's, 911's and such so as you can imagine I dogged the living hell out of it for 3 days. My last oil change was a little more than 1000 miles ago but I will be changing it ASAP. I dont need to but I would rather do it anyways because I want to make sure my bike continue to run as good as it does.

When you do replace your oil can you feel/ hear a difference in the engine noise or the smoothness of the motor?
If the answer is NO you are changing your oil to much

Twice a year works for me. K&N filter 10 dlls on eBay free shipping no tax. And valvoline 10 40 full synthy from Wally mart 50 bucks a case last me forever. Use the same for dirt bike honda crf 450. Seem like happy machines to me.

Annually for me. Sometimes less, but I don't ride near the miles for changes more often than that. New filter every time.

I don't see sludge and/or contamination even at yearly intervals. Keeping up with the other things (chain, plugs, valves & air cleaner) all help to keep the engine running well too.

Unlike other bikes I've owned, the Versys has such long maintenance intervals, it's almost no effort to keep it running like new. That was one of the reasons I decided on it in the first place. Since I do all my own maintenance on cars & bikes, it began to feel like I spent more time wrenching than riding.

I change the oil every 2500-3000 miles and use Castrol full synthetic motorcycle oil. No complaints or problems.
