I resemble that remark. I sometimes change the oil early if I'm planning a longer trip, say at 4000 km. I drain the filter and use it again. Filters are good for much longer than we give credit for. Why throw away money and create more waste?(who would change the oil and not change the filter??)
8000 km is reasonable. I also fill to near the top of the glass.Compared to engine components, etc. oil and filters are inexpensive.
I, therefore, like to change oil and filter at every 8000 km or less.
Note: I fill to the top line on the sight glass. More oil = better cooling, etc...
I don't have my manual near me, but I think that 2.4 quarts is for an engine that has been completely opened up and reassembled, i.e. not a drop of old oil in it to be seen. How much oil are you putting in with a filter change. In the manual one area says 1.9 quarts then in another part of the manual it says 2.4 quarts
Oil is added to be equal to the highest oil level indicator line because the extra oil helps cool the stator. This was discussed way back in the Gen 1 days and as i remember, oils change with or without filter change, oils was supposed to be topped up just above the center line of the oil level indicator.
