Hello from south shore of Montreal Quebec. Riding a 2007 Honda ST1300 ABS for 10 years this spring, I'm shopping for a lightweight motorcycle even if I will keep the ST for long trips. On the short list; Versys 650 and VStrom 650. Still comparing the Pros and Cons of each one. As of now, really difficult to choose between the two...

New Member - Can't post

Hello, I did all the steps a new member must(?) go through except for the "subscriptions" which doesn't seem to work. Many trys, many log-ins, log-outs. Still can't post in the different sections but this one for new members intro. Anybody can help? Admin?

I owned both the ST1300 and a V-Stom. If you want to take the 650 off the pavement occasionally the V-Strom is the way to go. I also looked at the Versys 650 and found that the cockpit area.Seat to handlebar to dash was a bit tight for me, where as the V-Strom was very natural feeling. So to solve my dilemma I keep the ST1300 and bought the V-Strom. With that said I now have an FJR to replace the ST and I have a Versys 1000LT and my V-Strom. Up Date: The Versys LT and the V-Strom are getting traded in on a new 2019 Versys 1000LT SE. I am keeping the FJR. Good luck with what ever you decide and GO RIDE.

As for your dilemma, I bought an 2007 V-strom a little over a year ago and really liked it! It was my first ADV-type bike. It's rugged, can take a decent beating and, IMO, is better for off-road than the Versys.

I traded the V-strom in after a few months as I found a Honda NC700 with the DCT. A smaller ADV-type bike but I couldn't get used to that DCT. It's an amazing piece of technology but just wasn't used to NOT having to shift.

Traded the NC in on my 2018 Versys 650. LOVE my Versys!!! It has the ADV-type feel yet still runs more sporty than the V-strom. I am not into off-roading so my choice was obvious, in the end. But I did find myself much more aggressive when riding the V-strom. It does handle pretty good!

With that said, although Suzuki makes some decent products (I've owned MANY Suzuki cruisers for years and they were all bulletproof!) But the V-strom does have a few quirks. One is the fuel pump that needs consistent maintenance. Maybe not so much the new ones but the one I had was due for a clean up. If you research the V-strom forum you will see that many of them get dirty after 20-30K. A relatively easy fix...but an extra hassle that the Versys "shouldn't" have!

I think it's going to come down to what you're looking for, what feels better to you and who has the best price! Overall, I'd be happy to ride either of them!

I replaced my Wee Strom with the V650. Both bikes are pretty good. I did find the Strom had a little more relaxed ergos, and seemed to handle slightly better, but i am getting used to the quirks of the V650. The V650 will probably be more affordable than a Strom. Either bike should bring you some smiles.
You will feel like you're dragging an anchor behind you on either bike compared to the ST, but that is to be expected with half the engine displacement.

I replaced my Wee Strom with the V650.
Jay, I would like to know what you thing about the engines of the Wee and the V. In reading a lot of reviews, some comments about the Versys say that, while very efficient, the Versys engine is a bit more bland; maybe because of its 180° firing interval?

What are your thoughts?

Well, I find that the L twin of the Vstrom is a bit smoother and has a bit more low end torque than the V650. The V650 parallel twin revs a bit easier and is happiest at higher RPMs. The fuel delivery on the Strom is definitely better than that of the V650. Below 3000 RPM on the V650 results in quite a bit of jerkiness. I plan on sending my ECU for a re-flash very soon to smooth it out.
Guess it boils down to : I think the Strom engine is smoother and more refined, and the V650 engine needs to be flogged a bit more to get the same smiles per mile as the Strom. Both have pretty good performance considering the small engine displacement.

Going from arm stretching liter sport bikes, Connie 14, and a KTM 1190 Adventure to the 2015 V650 I have to say the little V is the most fun bike of the bunch.

I am not a dual sport rider and rarely go off road except to get to a restaurant parking lot or a short stretch of dirt to connect to a paved road.

The Adventure bikes have a larger front wheel. 19 or 21 on the KTM. Mine had the 19 just like the Vstrom.

The bigger front wheel really slows down the handling so the bike does not have the nimble feel of a bike, like the V-650, with a 17 inch front wheel.

Also there is a much smaller selection of tires available for that 19 inch front wheel vs the 17 inch wheel. Check out Revzilla or Rocky Mountain ATV to see what I mean.

A couple of guys mentioned an ECU flash that is available from a member of this forum. I had mine done about 6 months ago and it really made the bike even more fun to ride.

A good friend of mine had a Wee-Strom and wasn't terribly impressed......he said it was tall and top heavy and didn't do well off road (he liked fishing the back country lakes).

I test rode a Wee, a Kawi KLR, a Suzuki Gladius, a Versys, and a Honda NC700 when I was downsizing from a 1500 Classic and it came down to the Versys and the NC700. I opted for the Versys due to the gas tank location on the Honda (would have to remove any bags off the rear pillion to re-fuel). I haven't regretted it yet.
