Just throwing this out there as I was reading about the 2014 Versys and I noticed the ignition system is comparable to the Ninja 1000. Both bikes are running the "TCBI w/ Electronic Advance", unfortunately a quick search on the web really yielded nothing that would inform me to the difference from the 2008(my model) Versys' CDI system.

I throw the Ninja 100 out there mainly because it was such a smooth running engine on my test run back some 2 years ago, in reading, the accolades do give it 2 thumbs up for the performance of the engine because it runs through the entire RPM range smoothly.

Seeing that the 2014 Versys has the "TCBI w/ Electronic Advance" the specs coincide with the 2011 Versys from which I gather is when the ignition system switched over.

I am wondering since the 2008 is almost 80lbs lighter, is this a mod that I could accomplish and what would I have to change to do it.

The Kawasaki website alerts to a "supercedes" in the throttle assemblies for the 2014 Versys. To compensate I had to search in the 2011 parts fiche and so far in looking at the fiches' and knowing very little about ignition systems, the 2008 Versys and the 2014 Versys have these differences:

Throttle Assembly
2008 Versys Throttle Assembly (16163-0099)
2014 Versys Throttle Assembly (16163-0166)

Electronic Computer Unit
2008 Versys ECU (21175-0106)
2014 Versys ECU (21175-0313)

In the little that I know, the throttle body does have couplings that I would assume connect to the ECU. The prices indicate it would be a $1K job just in parts but would the 80lb difference in the bikes weight actually give it a different ride assuming that a TCBI w/ digital advance is comparable to the Ninja 1000's characteristics.

My 2008 Versys has 41K+ miles on it, she rides smooth but has the slight grunt in the lower RPM range I am thinking due to the CDI system. Is this a mod for the 2008 Versys?

Thanks!!!

In terms of performance would TCBI w electronic advance be a viable upgrade?

Would it eliminate the backfiring in engine braking at low RPM's, is a TCBI w/ Digital Advance available for the Versys and could I just buy the ECU or throttle assembly instead of both?
No.

No, no, and no.

Only the ECU's calibration was changed in 2009, and again in 2010.

What elevation do you ride in, and with which grade and ethanol content of gasoline? Do you also suffer from a lean stumble, mostly near 2,800 rpm?

Try rotating your main throttle sensor counterclockwise by about 0.5 mm to start.

It ISN'T 80 pounds lighter. Kawasaki just got "shamed" into showing the real weight.
Correct.. per Kawasaki the 2008 is 399lbs and the 2014 is 460.8lbs, for a difference of 61.8lbs, not quite 80lbs.

Hehehe.

My '08 is right around that 450 to 460#. Kawi just put a "made-up" weight out there when they imported the '09s to the US.
