Any pointers appreciated.

Couple of month ago on a recent trip I suspected I needed a new clutch or is was slipping. If I hit the throttle changing down it would rev as though I depressed the clutch half way before it accelerated. I mentioned to service who pointed out the clutch cable needed changing.

However, since the new cable I ow nhave trouble entering neutral and I have to rock the bike for it to engage or disengage. Alternatively, I have to slowly release the clutch half way for it to slip in.

Clutch forks the problem? Any suggestions welcomed. Bike has done 26,000km.

What kind of km are those 26,000? Lots of city riding with frequent shifting?

I agree with the clutch cable adjustment. You should feel only the slightest play before the cable goes tight.

It seems like the V has a sensitive clutch. I have mine slightly tight when cold, so it is perfect when warmed up (cable slightly longer.)

Give it a try, as well as the chain.

From Kawasaki, the clutches come w/ the "engage/disengage" point a LONG way from the bars, which puts a LOT of strain onto the cable when you hold the clutch-lever against the bars at a traffic light. I suggest you adjust the cable till that point ("engage/disengage") is much closer. That also helps you to be able to 'slip' the clutch when necessary.

Cheers for the pointers. As for the mileage, most is city riding. At 5:30am to work I have a traffic free 30 min run. Home is 1hr 30!

I've adjusted the cable already but it is further away making for a longer stretch. I'll adjust the other way and report later.

That's right. It also won't shift as well with crappy oil in it... What oil do you have in there, BKKPhil, and what's your change interval Kms?

Try spraying all the shifter linkage points with some WD40 once the bike is warmed up. Take it out again immediately and run through the gears. Wipe the linkage down, then spray on a quality lithium grease.

Another thing to do is to lube the cable and pivot point in the lever. I pull the cable free at the lever and then run a little light oil (3 in 1) a few drops at a time so as not to make a big mess until I have maybe 1/2 a teaspoon of oil down the cable housing. Next I use a bit of grease and lube the pivot point on the lever before I reinstall the cable. Ever notice how many cables break at the lever? Because they bind up due to a lack of grease in the lever forcing the wire to flex right at the lug and the wire breaks right there.

There are kits for this job BUT I'm cheap and the way I learned still works fine even if it is a bit more work, all of 10 minutes. I normally do the cable while the oil is draining when I change it.

This sounds like a clutch problem. Neutral should not be a problem with the Versys' automatic neutral finder. Switching to synthetic oil will definitely make shifting better, particularly on downshifts.
