well after a slight delay, due to a cock up on the pannier racks it looks like I'm leaving Bown Island BC for Washingto tomorrow morning. wanted to go down the east side of the rockies but still looks cold and snowy so I'm not going there yet, perhaps in 5 weeks time.

so the oddesey finally kicks off tomorrow morning can't wait
will endeavour to fill out this post over the trip. can't add photos here.

got to Victoria on Vancouver Island after leaving Bowuptoen at 07:30, two ferries to get to Nanaimo

hit the road proper around 10:15 for Port Albertini, then made my way south to Victoria
so far the Destiantion Highwasy seem to be holding there own, some fantastic roads today. weatehr wasn't really upto piccies, and on the odd occasion there were sme photgenic moments I was hammering it...

fantastic forest road very narrow, very slow, through Finlayson park, then opened out on to Prospect lake road.... that raod was obviously a bike magnet, masses of bikes all out for a play.

sat nag got its knickers in a twist and chopped the reaminder of the route to Port Renfrew, but I fell tired, and want a rest.

so its off to Olympic peninsular tomrorrow via port angeles.

merde Ill pluet was yesterdays theme....
got to Port Anglees on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State,quick blast up Hurrican Ridge to the South of PA. fantastic road, lots of twisted, well paved, bit of gravel on the road, through the cloud layer was snowing at the top of the ridge.

was so wet not a good day to be brandishing the camera

AH yes. America's finest out collecting revenue.....lol
They used to pretty much let 5-10 over go by except in school zones. Recently they have been cracking down a LOT more.

320 mile plus day today. left Forks around 10:30, having decided to avoid the hail.
was raining most of the day. went on a couple of sections of the coastal highway, the bit near Moclips / Pacific beach deffo worth it. would have been nicer in the dry.

to add to the occasional hail there were also strong winds from the west making for vicious crosswinds close to the sea.

only got the camera out once today, in part becuase of the weather, but also the late start and long route called for fewer stops today, thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it. got into Vader around 18:45 to find its a one horse town, and the French or is it the Belgians had been there first and scoffed it so had to do another 20 minutes or so to Cedar Creek on the I5, where Im overnighting. still to crappy (for me) to go camping.

highlights
the two costal road bits
lovely country backroads towards Centralia
completed the route as planned
Destination Highways book seems to be ideal.

lowlights
the weather (hail, rain sleet...)
cocked up one minor part of the route, meaning I missed out on what looked a promising leg adjacent to a railway

I hope the weather keeps improving. At least until you leave WA and OR, I'm not responsible for weather any further south... :D

It looks very nice here today and through the weekend, should be good for a few days at least.

couldn't connect to t'internet yesterday
dunno if its was gremlins or incompetance (my guess is the latter)
left Cedar Creek (formally known as Castle Rock :007:) around 09:00 went to go and see Mount St Helens.was advised road was closed at Coldwater Lake so couldnt' get to the end of that road, however I chickened out and about turned when I saw snow and slushy stuff on the down lanes. even though I knew the other side was also blocked, then made way round to approach the east side of the Volcano. having had my route plans stuffed with a capital "F" stopped for a brew at Randle. decided to got to 'Paradise', well all those Islamic Bombers must have something going for them..... however weathr turned snowy again, decided to bug out further east towards Naches, hoping to miss the crappy weather. lovely long mountain pass, not very twisty but good fun all the same. arived Natches 17:00 ish, done about 240 miles or so.

left Naches this morning around 09:00, was woken by the schools maching band out for their mornning cacophony. because of weather issues had to do a 120 mile scoot down interstate freeway till the days fun started. ended up doing 420+ miles today. having left the freeway most of the route was remote, few vehicles,few things to see or do. roads all fast lots of corners :020:. its a bit like North Wales writ large. not many sheep, some of Neilos Welsh crows have made it here, although they have grown a wee bit. views are spectacular, especially as there is no ZZR1400 blocking sight lines :008:.

ended today in Clarkston, just over the border in Idaho. not given any though yet as to what the plan is for tomorrow, will just have to wing it

think I saw a genuine roadrunner, spookily also saw lots of dead brushwood, even heard that evocative bird screech that westerns use to indicate trouble was a'comin.

learned an important lesson, not to pass fuel stations when in rural areas, had to go and blag some fuel from a farmer :012: all in all a cracking days fun and games. but 420 miles. arse was a bit sore towards the end.

highlights
fast open roads, not much traffic in the bookies.
at last a mostly dry sunny day
managed to complete the programmed ride

lowlights
almost ran out of petrol, need to plan better
threatend to get cut short with thunder & Lightening storms and the obligatory hail.
nearly got taken out by a swallow or swift that came a bit close
lots of repairs going on, couple of detours on dirt tracks reminded me I'm strictly a tarmac rider. had a few pucker up moments on gravel as veered of the compacted stuff into loose. was controllabel with less speed and more attention to where I was going
sad the dams are off limits post 9/11, you used to be able to drive across most dams but no longer
....couldn't resist, just for towerman, the pylons at the foot of Lower Monument dam

Day 6, Clarkston to Spokane, not the direct route, natch.... that'd be too easy and to obvious :)


Although I did around 360 miles today, it was a bit of a cockup... was enjoying one road so much, forgot to look at the GPS, and overshot the turning by a mere 25 miles... so that put the program back an hour. went via Palouse falls onto St John, and ended up shadowing the railway from Pullman to Spokane on a generall fast but scenic route. some of the area was the same as yesterday, generally high desert... lots of farming going on, mostly grain, using irrigation, some livestock and some vegetable crops
