Cops had locked out entrances at our local Walmart about 2 hours ago. Now the trans-national Highway 11 is shut down near my house at town entrance. The entire city is now on lock-down, and nobody knows what happened yet! :surprise: I have the backed up highway and police barrier on video.

No answer when I try calling Walmart, normally open now.

Sadly I get pages of different results from different incidents when I google "Walmart shooting" or "Walmart murder". None in Kapuskasing though.

Police locate, arrest armed suspect in Kapuskasing

Theft suspects in possession of firearms, say police. Several businesses evacuated... Police attended the area and arrested a female. During the arrest, a male fled from police, eastbound, into a wooded area behind local businesses. Police investigation revealed that the suspects were in possession of firearms.

The male suspect was located and arrested, Highway 11 is now open and there is no longer a threat to public safety.

The OPP's Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), Emergency Response Team (ERT), Canine Unit (K9), Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and the James Bay Detachments' Crime Unit are assisting in this ongoing investigation.

The armed fugitive actually tried to steal my friend's pickup truck as he attempted to flee police. He was surprised to suddenly find his driveway was filled with cops after smoking a large bong of marijuana in his garage as he exclaimed "What the Phuck!". :surprise: They were tracking, then backtracking the fugitive's path in the snow cover during the highway lockdown. Bonnie and Clyde had apparently left their car with guns parked at Walmart.

The OPP were out in full force this evening in my little village. Armed robbery at one of the gas stations. There were cruisers everywhere in an effort to keep the criminals boxed in until the K-9 unit could be brought in.

It says something about the state of the country/economy when criminals are targeting small villages...

MaClean's magazine recently did a cover story on regional crime in Canada. Interestingly crime per capita is very low in most medium to large cities. It's some small western and northern towns with high unemployment or other areas with pockets of poverty and high unemployment where the crime rate starts to soar. Here in Ottawa (city of 1 million) I would feel comfortable walking in any part of the city, at any time of day or night. The gangs here only seem to prey on other gang members. While there is some violent crime it seems to be all directed at those in the drug trade, or gangs. There is not a significant amount of randomly targeted serious violent crime. Employment opportunities and crime rates seem to be directly related.
