So I am seeing 70 mph at 5000 rpms in sixth gear and on average 50 MPG. Let me know what you guys and gals are seeing at what MPH and RPM with MPG.

I like lokto7's answer. Not that we in the USA should be using metric, but that units are wonderful things.

Unless there is something horribly wrong with our hardware, the relationship between rpm and mph should be pretty well fixed. If you want to know, during most of my commute I can attest to the fact that, in 3rd gear, my speedometer indicates 35 mph at right around 4000 rpm. I have a fun commute, but there are plenty of 35 mph stretches.

I have right around 1000 miles on my Versys and have recorded mpgs of 55, 53 and 52. I hope that the trend does not continue. I would love to be getting 55 mpg.

There are lots of variables with gas mileage;
rider weight, weight added to the bike, bags added to the bike, headwinds, windshield size, temp, altitude, octane of gas, rider aggressiveness, in-town, highway etc, the list is endless.

But, most seem to get around the 50mpg mark, based on a US gallon and the stock 15 tooth sprocket. Regardless of the exact mpg, its a fun bike to ride at any speed, two up, one up etc etc.

I got 52MPG from the last tank. Just switched to full synthetic oil...waiting to see if it makes any difference.

Stock gearing shows the same 70 mph at 5K rpm. If ridden "fun," we see low 50's mpg. If ridden easy, we see high 50's. This bike is not fun for me to try to ride hard/fast. That just makes it a disappointment. There's not enough power for that. OTOH, in the twisties and/or at part throttle, low-mid revs, it's awesome. If I want to go hard, I go to another bike.

I went out for a ride today and double checked my RPM vs MPH and at 5000 RPM I am doing 70 or 71 MPH depending on the wind. At 6000 RPM it jumps to 80 or 81 MPH. Given the discrepancy in the odometer I believe I can deduct about 5 to 6 MPH off those speeds. From what I've read on this forum, if I went up one tooth on the front sprocket, the MPH would be pretty well about right.

Anyway it was fun to ride!

My bike is stock right now (just got the 16T sprocket) and I'm getting 52 - 53 MPG around town and 55 -57 on the highway. I'm not generally a hard driver, but I don't see a big difference when I push it a bit. I'm just shy of 4K miles right now. Do I understand that synth oil gives better gas milage?

Another question - when I change the sprocket, I'm assuming that it won't show any difference in MPG because the odometer will change along with the speedo. Is that right? It seems that my speedo is off right now, but the odometer seems pretty accurate. So from now on I'll have to do a bit of figuring to get my true MPG won't I?

Has anyone herd a small click after you rev and allow the throtle to return home there sounds like a click noise I only hear it right after reving

Docteric, you speedo will now be almost nuts on accurate, maybe 1mph optimistic, compared with a nearly 10% optimistic reading you got with the 15tooth.

On the other hand your odometer will now underread, giving you the impression that your mpg is not as good as it was before. Where its actually a bit better.

As always a GPS will be your best guide if you want true accuracy on speed and distance.

After having mine on for a few months, I like the accurate speedo and don't care about the odometer, but I do have a GPS.

Simple eh???

No, with standard 15t sprocket, odometer is accurate, speedo is 8-10 optimistic. With 16t sprocket, speedo is accurate, odo reads about 6% less, give or take.

Ok.....OK..... New subject and question..... Im new on the V and want to know is it normal for there to be a Humming sound when you hit about 45 mph and up..... kinda like your mud grip tires on your off road jeep sound when you go down the highway.... is that normally for this bike and/or other chain driven bikes????

My guess, the common cowl vibration, some closed-cell foam tape strategically placed should do the trick. Do a search for more info, try the word buzz.

Hudsonbay, That click sound you hear is your throttle cam returning to it's stop. With the engine off look at the right side of your bike under the tank. Focus on where the idle adjustment is and your throttle cables run to the throttlebody.

Let the throttle snap closed a couple times and you will hear the click where I told you to look.
