....am 2600 miles into a USA western tour from my base in FL: have crossed Texas, visited Phoenix, and then gone north to Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon's south rim. Will circle to the north rim and then on to Capitol Reef...

At Flagstaff: Percival Lowell's 24-inch refractor telescope at the Lowell Observatory. Lowell believed Mars hosted a dying civilization...

Near Flagstaff: Wupatki Native American ruins, including this pueblo at Wukoki...

ImageUploadedByMO Free1371094817.150049.jpg

South Rim: the usual view north (and down)...

ImageUploadedByMO Free1371094940.771497.jpg

Heading for the North Rim: the Navajo Bridge at Lees Ferry. The 1929 bridge and its modern successor stand 467 feet over the Colorado River.

Looks like fun, lucky guy.

If you can fit it in, go to Moab, Utah, then Canyonlands Park. Now that road has to be fun on a bike, and there I was in a Mini Van this spring. Oh well.

JeremyAZ, you are right. I have had a lot of comments -some from yahoos and some from experienced riders. About half the conversations so far have begun with a stranger saying "Nice BMW!"

"Ride On!" (compared to "right-on") The photo of the bike . . . are you doing this ride/trip without side bags? There MUST have been some 'warm' stretches through Texas and New Mexico. What are you doing to handle the heat?

PeeWee-Houston, I usually set up camp or check into a motel and remove the hard cases before I go scouting around for photos/hikes....itinerary says from here (Capitol Reef) to Baker City, OR, I will provably be leaving them on.

Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona have been hot.Grand Staircase Escalante was a furnace. I am wearing a Tourmaster Epic jacket, which is a heavy jacket with many vents. The vents are effective, but at a certain part of the day you are venting 95+ degree heat at yourself so you are going to feel it. I try to start early in the day to take advantage of the cooler air and get in as many miles in as possible... Then, when it gets hot I make a stop between fuel stops and drink plenty of water each time. Also I lie to myself: (I am headed north) and tell myself tomorrow will be a cooler ride...like today: about to leave for Moab - it's got to be cool and pleasant over there. :)

Thanks, guys... Things on the tour are still going well, except I am having a bit of trouble posting from my iPad: difficult to undo placement if some of the images.

Here are some shots from Capitol Reef. I made the run today from Capitol Reef to Moab: hot and windy.

My case-less bike near the fruit orchards and trailhead for the Cohab Canyon trail.

Amazing to see the orchards surrounded by brutal desert

Most of Capitol Reef looks like this:

...and this:

...want to share what I am doing for chain maintenance on this trip in a future post to see what you think - so far I believe it is working well.

Take it easy, everyone!

Still moving along... Rode from Capitol Reef to Moab - the long way, through Glen Canyon.

Some photos:

This is what the bike looks like when I am doing miles and not scouting around:

View of the Colorado from the Hite Overlook in Glen Canyon, near Lake Powell. Water levels here vary greatly. There is supposed to a small river joining the Colorado from the green area on the left. That would be the Dirty Devil, but no Dirty Devil this time...

View of part of Canyonlands National Park through Mesa Arch:

Another try with what appears initially to be a real Internet connection...those kids with the tin cans and string ran away with my money.

Nice pics. You sure are getting to see a lot. Now, I have to figure how to: 1) get the bike on the back of the van 2) How to get to ride this area for a week on our way down South this fall.

Just jealous.

northsouth,

someday a plan will come together... time seems to be a rare and expensive commodity...I miraculously made it to retirement in half-way decent physical shape. I hope very much a solution presents itself to you!

Using the SAE (battery tender plug to battery) to USB phone charger on this trip for my iPhone. The unit is available on Amazon.com... Sold by "Zootfresh"...works well so far...

(Photo: the unit is the black object only - you supply your own USB to phone charge connection cable, and the SAE connecting wires to your battery if you don't already have them in place.)
