Sent a letter to kwaka re: new bike servicing.
I bought a new 2010 told that servicing was at 1000 then every 3000 afterwards.

My mileadge is any thing around 12000 a year and my first straight forward service cost me £180.00p I could have 5 services in the first year and 4 in the second with services that could cost far more than the simple first service.
this equates to first year £900 plus (expecting to pay more for heigher mileage servicing) second year £720 plus thats a whopping £1620 if they are all the same price as the first which is very unlikely I'm proberly going to be charged more like £2000.


My wifes vauxhal tigra twin top cost £140 this was for a 20,000miles or 24 month service which ever came first. thats £1860 less than the versys.
no wonder new bike sales are down I love my bike but it is very very expensive to keep on the road.


If i bought a smart car (no intensions to do so) a deisel would cost me £200 every 10,000 miles 0 tax cheap insurance cheaper tyres 70 plus to the gallon is there something seriously wrong here??


I think motor cycle maufactorers set servicing to the rider who goes out on a Sunday afternoon if its not damp or wet and a does no more than 3000 a near then wraps it up in cotton wool for the winter hense it will need a yearly oil change.

Kwaka recomend 3000 or yearly which ever comes first
Dont we all check tyre,brake wear,fluids,lights,chain and any thing that does not feel right as matter of course for safety.
That only leaves the engine oil change £180 is expensive oils.

No wonder new sales are down and riders are more likely to buy a good out of warrenty second hand bike.

£180.00 to have what done?? There's no mention of servicing at every 3000 miles in your owner's manual. At 12000 miles a year, you could change synthetic JASO MA 10W-40 oil every 4000 miles, even though Kawasaki recommends it at only every 7500 miles. Valve clearance check is recommended at every 24000 miles. See owner's manual for all other service intervals... I do all my own maintenance, free of charge. I know what was done, and that time was taken to do it right. :)

My letter to Kawa would be more like:
"Thank you Kawasaki for such a great, reliable, efficient, affordable, easily serviced and highly reliable state-of-the-art Versys." :clap:

The manual reads different 600 mls (6 or mths)3750mls (or 12mths)7500mls (0r 18mths)11250mls 15000mils (or 24mths)

thats still 5 services a lot of servicing dosh.

The red mist has subsided a little bit.

Just had my first service, 1038 kms, break-in period. Did that one at the dealer, and paid $185 Canadian. Too expensive for what is really an oil change, chain lube and a and a once over. I did it for peace of mind that all's well so far.

As I did with my old bike, 1st service at the dealer and I'll now do all the basic maintenance myself, or if need be - with the help of some knowledgeable riding buddies. As you spend more time with the bike, you understand it more, what is needed and when. Doing a bit of wrenching on your own bike is WAY more fun than handing it over to a mechanic.

I found my maintenance costs were very low on the Ninja when I took this approach and fully expect the same results with the Versys.

P.S. Two years ago I was in a heated letter writing campaign with Kawasaki Canada over a dirty pre-delivery price increase they made me eat and exclusion from a promo offer that included every street bike they made, but mine. It was worse than complaining to the wall. I received nothing, several of my letters went unanswered, no matter how high up I sent the letters - the correspondence was always kicked down to the same flunky who was no help in the first place. Worst customer service I have ever encountered. I loved my Ninja, and I'm loving my Versys, but I'm still bitter with Kawasaki. (I got some satisfaction de-badging ALL the Kwaka labels from my bike!)... So, I do wish you good luck.

I did the first...peace of mind service and once over. Call me a fool for shelling out 180 bucks but....hey, peace of mind.

But thanks to everyone one here...well, I have the confidence to delve in to the bike and I do my own oil changes and scheduled maintenance now. (and do the other things.).
(Gonna up grade my brake lines this winter too..should be fun!).
Still debating about the extended warranty...got a few more weeks to decide.
Is it worth it.....????? Heck, the bike seems to be build like the proverbial "brick sh*t house" so is the extended warranty really worth the expense????
Decisions decisions DECISIONS!?!

I can and use to service all my bikes until I bought new and still within warrenty.
I also own a HD Fatboy and the 10k service will cost me £355 smackers unless I decide no to keep a full dealer service history.
Heard here somewhere they were charging top dollar for servicing and it was being done by non qualified dust bin lids who are fresh out of school.

Do all my own servicing on every vehicle I own unless it's free or covered under warranty. I do a better job than most any dealer would. The only things I don't do myself are gear sets - cars or bikes. I can still do R&R's, cars or bikes. Currently 4 cars, 4 bikes, and a motorhome. But then I have a doctorate in 'fixit'.

I don't buy extended warranties on anything either - pocket the $$ and take my chances. Over a lifetime I'm WAY ahead. Dozens of vehicles over the years, many of them new, electronics, appliances, nadda. Most of these coverages are not worth the paper they're printed on.

It's funny how they spend so much time learning drivetrain when they just end up changing oil. Throtle cable adjustment/lubrication is a lost art.

I negotiated first service in after they gave me their best and final offer. It is a trick my Dad taught me and I do it with all my vehicles. Get them down to where they think they have you then throw in "free first service and I'll take it". Works like a charm.

All other servicing thereafter done by me so I know what was done and that it was done right; not in a hurry by some high school dropout dope addict that they hired on some half-way program to change oil.

For my cages I let the dealers service them. I no longer understand what is under the hood with all the gadgets and do-dads and I don't have time to learn to understand it. Plus, they take care of all recall notices for me on the spot.

Buy a DIY manual and do your own maintenance. A valve adjust is easy to do on a parallel twin. So is brake maint and other regular stuff. Only basic tools like a ratchet set are required. When you do it yourself you know it is done right.

No problem doing my own its the warrenty thing
I don’t know how it is where you are but in the USA you can do your own servicing without voiding the warranty (as long as you keep records & receipts for the oil & filters, etc.).

My take on extended warranty:
The folks that MADE it (Kawasaki H.I.) are betting you it WON'T break...
while you are betting xxx$ that it WILL!
The "casino" has the odds in it's favor. :goodluck:

My letter would go something like "do something about the ****ing 4.2k vibrations, and have it under warranty."
