I was reading a safety tip in this month's AMA magazine that recommended staying in gear while waiting at stop lights in case a driver won't stop behind you in time.

I must admit I usually put the bike in neutral unless I can tell that the light will turn green in a short time.

I am curious what other riders do.... In gear or neutral?

I usually keep it in gear. Easier to just hold the clutch in rather than hear the trans. clunk into gear. Does it enough just riding around.

i always go to neutral but i keep my left foot on the peg in case i need to put it in gear in a hurry.

In gear until car coming up behind is stopped, and most of the time after that.

I stay in gear until I have two or three cars fully stopped behind me. Then neutral. I figure if someone rear ends the last car, hopefully by the time the pileup gets to me they wont move or my damage will be minimal. I doubt I could see a rear ender about to happen that far back anyway, so being in gear wont help me much.

In Neutral 90% of the time.
In Gear 8% of the time and
off engine 2% as some traffic lights are too long a period for comfort.:D

PS, % figures are rough estimates only and not as they reflect :D

In Gear 99% of the time...The only time I'll take it out of gear is waiting in construction traffic when I know I'm gonna being sitting a while....

I don't like to keep clutch lever pulled in.
I also don't see how being in gear will save you from cars coming from behind?

IMO it’s abusive to the clutch (even a wet one) to hold it in for extended periods of time, so...

In neutral... but with one eye on the mirror until I have a stopped car behind me. If I see someone coming up fast... I drop it into 1st and strobe my brake light until I’m comfortable that they’re stopping.

+1...but also remember to keep an eye on the mirror until those cars behind you stop.

If you are in gear and you see in your mirrors that you are about to get rear-ended, you can move ahead out of the way (i.e. between the cars in front of you).

For my part, I'm in gear with the clutch pulled in.

I always put it in neutral. But I always have my right foot down with my left on the peg. With my short legs it's more comfortable that way for some reason....maybe my right is longer than my left????

Anyway, it takes all but less than a second to put it in first...time I would need anyway to figure out where I'm going if a car is coming up fast.

Always in gear. When you stop at a light, that doesn't mean you get to quit paying attention.

A good example is when I lived in Vegas a few years ago. I was stopped at a light, in the right hand lane behind 3 cars. There were 2 cars in the left hand lane as well.
I was sitting there gawking around at stuff. Car coming up from behind caught my attention. He was moving pretty quick and was in my lane. I watched...he wasn't slowing. Pretty much at the last few seconds I got worried and split the left and right lanes and went all the way up to the stop line at the light. The car I was worried about finally realized he had screwed up, slammed his brakes and swerved. He went right thru where I had been sitting, slid into the left lane and hit the second car in that lane. That's why I keep it in gear. That's also why I keep an eye on a mirror when stopped.

Oh, I should've said I always lane-split (in standing traffic) so I'm always at the front.
I wouldn't want to go any further before light turns green no matter what is coming behind.

I do pump the brake to show them I'm there if I feel visibility may be an issue.

Neutral. But I usually lane-spit and go up to the front because I feel it is the safest thing to do (for a few reasons). Whenever I don't have cars behind me, I always pump the brakes to strobe the taillight and "monitor" what is going on behind me with the mirrors.

Wish we could do that. I see people do it sometimes, but it is illegal here. I don't, but think about it every time I'm sitting there...

In gear and set with an 'escape route' till several cars are stopped behind me.

Brings up a question: How close to a railroad crossing do you stop while a train's going through? :huh:

There've been a few derailments in my vicinity, so I TRY to remember to stop back aways, say 30 to 50 feet, to (hopefully!) survive if the train derails just before or in front of me. :badidea:

Always in gear, right foot on the brake, checking left,right,front and rear. I trust no one.
