Ok, guys, I've a question, especially to you long-range commuters and tourers:

I recetly took my bike to a 100km ride on the highway, opting to put it through its paces, and I noticed that when I reach 109-113 kmh, in 6th gear, I get to around 6000 rpm, and I get a distinct shaking in my left mirror, my handlebars, footpegs. The rest of the bike seems peechy keen, steers ok, buzzes loudly.)

My mechanic says I may have my wheels poorly balanced. Do any of you have any thoughts to affirm/contradict this diagnosis?

Also, To those of you riding two up: how high do you have to go rpm-wise to mantain competeable highway speed?

Most bikes have rpms where they seem to resonate, normal. If you had a tire imbalance it would get worse as your speed increased. Don't ride at that rpm if it bothers you.

The Versys is just coming into it's power band at about the RPM. I went to a 16t front sprocket on my 2012 as I end up running 70+MPH (112+ KPH) here on the interstates and the extra gearing helps to calm it down a bit. If you gear up to a 16t front sprocket need more get up and go you can always drop down a gear and punch it! The 15 to 16 change will drop the RPM about 500 rpm.

How old is your bike? It could need the FIs synced or a set of spark plugs.

My 08' Versys is pretty buzzy throughout the RPMs, but the mirrors buzz especially hard between 5-6k rpms.

I'm going to clean the Air Filter, Check the plugs, and sync the TBs soon. Hopefully that helps, I'll report back.

stock mirrors? if so, replacing them with just about any other i mirror improves the rear view. i have ZRX mirrors on my '09.

For the record, the 2015 Versys 650 does 126 km/h at 6000 rpm and there isn't any annoying vibration, since they started mounting the engine on rubber blocks.

Maybe it's worth checking out if the gears or sprockets are different and see if the ones from 2015 fit the older models?

I went on my first unrestgricted licence freeway ride a few months ago (basically legal to go over 90km/hr). I also did experienced vibration/shudder/shaking in the handlebars at about 105-110km/h. It felt like an unbalanced front wheel. My front is was electronically balanced. My mate (on ER6N) says he sometimes get it also at just over 100km/h.

I think I might be just some resonance from the type of road surface I was on.
Because it did not happen for most of the ride... just sometimes.
An unballnced wheel whould be felt all times at those speeds.

Time, mine is '12, recently bought from a diigent owner who just tech-checked it, so it should be ok fuel system-wise... Who can say though. I'll see how it behaves...

Ok, so I did all of the above. The TBs were definitely out of sync and so I adjusted them to correct the issue. This actually made quite the difference; the bike starts, runs and shifts way better than before!

However, the buzzy mirrors between 5-6k RPMs was still quite strong and annoying. Good News: I fixed the issue using silicon to fill the seam between the Mirror Glass and the Plastic housing.

I even made a couple videos which will hopefully help others with this horribly annoying problem.
