I'm new to the forum and started riding again last fall after a 50 year layoff. I started with a Honda Rebel and this spring I traded it in for a Honda CTX700. Then I saw a used Kawasaki Versys and bought that also.

My problem is that I have a Vega modular helmet and I can't twist my head around far enough to check the adjacent lanes to see if anything is coming. This gets a little scary. Are all modular helmets like that? It's gotten to the point that I'm considering a Skully helmet with the heads-up display when they come out, but they will probably be too expensive.

Perhaps you should take a look at the Reevu MSX1 rear view mirror helmet. It's available from a number of retailers including Amazon. Web Bike World has a review here: http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/reevu/msx1/

I have to ask though, are your mirrors of no value at all? I've set my left mirror so I can see what's overtaking me, and my right mirror so I can see what's behind me. If the mirrors on your Versys can't do that then you should consider mirror extenders from Moto Werk, or different mirrors such as those from the Aprilia Tuono or KTM Super Duke 990.

I also would like to ask what you think of the CTX700. My wife is interested in it because she likes the cruiser seating position and the fact that the weight seems to disappear when lifted off the side stand. I (and she) would appreciate your thoughts.

I will check that helmet out. Also, I have read all the posts here about the mirror extenders and do plan on getting a pair.

My left mirror will not stay in place. I've taken it to the dealer twice and the first time he tightened the 10mm nut inside the higher bolt. It came loose again and he tightened the higher bolt. So far it seems ok but now I don't trust it at all. I'm really worried about not seeing a car in my blind spot and pulling in front of one. I do have the mirrors set the way you suggested but I still can't see through my shoulders.

The Honda CTX700 is a great bike. I have the automatic with ABS and the fairing. It's very comfortable and very easy to balance. I don't know if I'd buy the automatic again though. My thought behind getting the automatic was even though I know how to drive a stick-shift car I don't buy them any more because it's too much work to shift, so why would I want to shift a motorcycle? Now that I have the Versys it's confusing at first when I switch from the automatic to the manual shift on the Versys. Plus it is sort of fun to do the manual shifting. The Honda does have paddle shifters so you can change gears manually if you want without having to worry about a clutch. Also, the automatic is very good at sensing if you want to stay in a lower gear for a while for more pickup. It also has two ranges of auto gearing you can choose, D for driving and S for sport (speed). Below 50mph I use the S mode and over 50 I switch to D mode. Either one will work fine both in town and on the interstate.

The windshield on the Honda is pretty much useless. Your head gets blown around quite a lot on the interstates. You can get a bigger factory windshield but it doesn't look as good so I didn't get one.

I have a Shoei Multitec and don't have that problem. Is part of the helmet catching on something or why won't it turn?

Extend AND get a pair of Aprillia Tuono mirrors. That'll fix your problem. The OEM mirrors are NOT great, besides being too 'narrow'.

I recently bought a Nolan N104 modular and the field of view is much larger than other helmets I have had. Might be worth a try if there is a dealer in your area.

I've owned a few standard FF helmets and they all allowed me to see behind me with a quick head check. If you don't have neck issues I would suspect it is your particular helmet that is the issue.

Do you just screw either of these on without any adapting if I have the mirror extenders also? I am a terrible mechanic. Also, do they help with the vibration problem?

I had the mirror extenders on mine. Yes they bolt right down just put them in the position you want and tighten it down no swivel or coming loose. If you watch the video you can see clearly in the mirrors..:goodluck:
