Hello All! Excited to be here. I purchased my first Versys 1000 two days ago and have loved every second of it so far and traveled almost 400 miles already. Joined to learn as much as i can about the bike and for any helpful suggestions you all might have for a new owner. I bought a 2015 LT model from the original owner in mint condition with 20k miles on it. My wife and I are planning to ride to San Francisco next week for our maiden voyage. Any favorite sights or things we should plan on stopping to see “vs” (sorry couldn’t help my self) places or things to avoid…?

The 101 along the coast is absolutely gorgeous, particularly around Port Orford and further south towards CA. Avenue of the Giants is pretty stunning as well.

Welcome from Texas. Be safe in that California traffic. In the 90's I had a route in a semi-truck from LA to Sacramento and I'm sure it hasn't gotten any better.

Welcome from Olympia, WA. The north side of the Columbia Gorge is beautiful, and the ride from Carson north is apparently famous. Maybe I'll see you there!

I'll second this one, though the gravel sections up in the Gifford Pinchot forest area go from mild gravel to fairly extreme offroad pretty quick depending on where you go. I'll probably stick to pavement next time I ride through the area.

202 between Jewell and Astoria is a really fun stretch of road also.

I didn't get a chance to ride it when I did my redwoods trip last year, but I'm told Mattole rd (the 'Lost Coast' road, starting in Ferndale and looping out to the coast and back in to Avenue of the Giants) is supposedly absolutely stunning. I believe there are stretches of gravel and bits of disrepair along the road, but I've found a couple folks doing that stretch on GSXR's and the like, so I'd imagine a Versys could tackle it no problem.

Welcome!
You're in Portland, so I assume you've seen Crater Lake - if not, it's a must-do.

As soon as you cross that CA border lane-splitting becomes legal!

And everything else is illegal or has a Prop 65 warning

One thing I like about this forum is that posts are [usually] apolitical. We get enough of that crap elsewhere.

I looked up your suggestions last night and we are going to check out the avenue of the giants. Booked a nice AIRBNB in Eureka to serve as a homebase so we can explore around the Redwoods and surrounding area. Thank you for your input
