I am a senior rider (approx 62% of a century old) returning after a 40 year layoff. I rode dirt bikes a bit as a youth but never bought a bike. Through a unique set of circumstances I got my motorcycle license without ever taking the test. So I attended the motorcycle safety class (classroom). I tried to sign up for the range class but they goofed and that did not happen.

About 1 1/2 years ago I bought a Honda CB500X. This is a fine bike for what it is and my intentions were to upgrade it with a Rally Raid kit (19" front wheel, etc). That still might happen. Or maybe a Versys?

As I ride more my style of adventure will mature but I do not see many long highway trips in my future. I would like to commute with the bike and explore the region. That would, I hope, include unpaved roads and some light trails.

I have always been put off by heavy bikes. I am not a very muscular gent so I really have more fun with lighter bikes.

The Versys-X 300 was not quite on the showroom floors when I bought my CB500X. I tried to hold out to see a Versys-X 300 but was not sure how long it would take for them to be available.

The CB500X is just about at the limit for me weight wise. I can stand it up after it lays down but I do struggle. Practiced that a few times.

The Versys-X 300 is very intriguing to me. Rather light. Enough power to keep up with reasonable highway speeds. Smooth. Nearly 50 lb lighter than the CB500X.

I am approaching a significant decision point: dump a fair piece of change into the CB500X for a RR upgrade, or sell it and get a V-X300.

My research for this decision has started today by joining this forum. I will no doubt ask a few questions along the way.

I've got a few percentage points on you age-wise, but I will offer the following:

a) I came from a ZX14 to something that offered a bit more sanity in the rural (heavily wooded) area where I live. Something that is capable of 100MPH in 600 feet and lots of deer don't mix well.

b) the 300 won't take your breath away, but it does everything VERY well. The 650 does everything VERY well too, and allows a bit of breathing room at highway speeds.

No matter what, I think you'll not be disappointed at the Kaw offerings.

Welcome aboard. I'm not quite as old (that's advanced senior status) as fasteddie, but at 73 I'm not far behind. Then again, he's Canadian and will probably live longer than I will.

I am not able to post in the other sections yet so let me ask a few semi-urgent questions then please.

As mentioned, I am considering the possibility of switching from my CB500X to a VX300. I contacted the dealer that I purchased my 500 from. They have a 2017 in grey supposedly highly discounted at $4660 out the door.

Is that a good price?

Is there any significant differences between the 2017 & 2018 models?

I will start that research but was hoping for a bit of quick input just in case I need to move fast.

Any input is most appreciated.

Oh, and I have read here a little about crash bars. What are the thoughts about the factory crash bars? Are there better aftermarket ones available?

And I see there is auxiliary headlights. Any reports about them?

Arion - you got it WRONG. Let's see - 73US vs 75Cdn...? Isn't the factor .8? Then you're 73US and I'm 60US....:smile2:

OR does it go the OTHER way? :surprise: We'll try THAT: 75Cdn vs 73US means I'm 60US and you're TWELVE....

I'm getting a headache - time for a beer....

I had a CB500X before my Versys 650. I am not a large chap either. The Versys is much heavier and taller and higher center of gravity. I had to lower it an inch to flat foot. (32" inseam). lowering made it more manageable. The Versys is better on highway due to larger faring and increased weight. But i plan to explore more fire roads once I reach Colorado etc. So I am considering returning to the much more manageable CB500X.

Jim - did you 'set' the "sag" yet? (I'm about 5'9", 31" inseam, and I pretty-much flatfoot it after it 'settles'.)
