Finally got around to adjusting my chain and realized that I'm right at the limit of the adjuster. So I'll be getting new sprockets and chain real soon!

I bought this bike second hand 3+ years ago, previous owner had swapped the rear sprocket to lower his RPM riding the super slab to and from work. I felt the power was pretty good with that setup and never really complained.

But I never rode it with the stock tooth count.

I'm wondering if I should go back to stock sprockets? Seems like I'd get a bit more acceleration, a wee bit less clutch wear (arbitrarily if that), more room on the adjuster?

Keep in mind my riding is really just two and from work, in the city with traffic and only 8 miles each way. Occasionally will go for a lazy backroads ride to get ice cream in the next state (cause the Sonic restaurants in hick towns have girls on rollerskates... that's why!) I absolutely hate riding on the interstate and only do so when I have to, otherwise my top speed is rarely over 65mph

How many teeth on the sprockets? I have 15 front and 43 rear, I might be happier with 44 rear. You may want to take a link out if you still run a smaller than stock rear sprocket. I found first gear too short with the 46 stock rear, but I ride 90/10 street. Acceleration with either sprocket is just fine.

I just did a front sprocket conversion to 16T. Most of my TIME is twisties, most of my MILES are superslab, unfortunately. I tend to ride in a "spirited" fashion.

I believe the maths work out so that going from 15 to 16T up front is the same as going down a tooth in the back, which is probably what your guy did. On my bike, what I've gained is the ability to wait longer to shift in intersections (good), about 800-1500 fewer turns at speed (good), longer shift intervals (good) and completely new shift points (weird! Third gear at 65 feels weeeeeird!) It's way smoother now on take-off but noticeably slower. This is actually a GOOD thing for me because I have a bad habit of really wringing her out, so this is forcing me to be a calmer, more chill operator. For real, it's not uncommon for me to only average like 32mpg.

I'm still learning it, I have like maybe 500 miles since the swap. I think it's potentially worth it for you to feel what "stock" feels like but I'd suggest you keep those clutch fingers hovering for a while. Sprockets are incredibly inexpensive, so you can always revert.

Over about 110,000 miles among three Vs (QUITE a bit of that on dirt), all w/ stock gearing (15F/46R), I've never considered changing the gearing. Stock works FINE for me...!
