This is the first time I have gotten new tires for any of my bikes and I just wanted to run it past you people to make sure I was getting the right size's. I did read the post about correct sizes but I guess I am a little paranoid.

For front I am going with a 120/90 17 TT 64H Shinko 705
or 120/70 17 56V Pirelli MT60R

Rear 150/70 R17 TL 69H Shinko 705
or 150/70 R 17 TL 69R Metzeler Karoo 3

Is there anything I should be aware of not going with stock sizes? This is for a 09 V.

Thanks in advance, sorry for beating a dead horse I just need to hear someone other then myself say its a good/bad idea.

I would not go with the Shinko 120/90 far to steep of a tire.
The MT60r is a FAR better tire, go with that.

150/70 shinko 705 for the rear is fantastic!

I do! Put about 750 miles on it before I had to put it away for the winter. For the price, I do not know if it can be beat!

I also have an MT60R on the front. Superb tire, on the Versys you'll get 7k+ out of it easily.

YES! I (and others that I know) have had either "incipient" tread separations (ME - 17 of them on a rear 705 Shinko, on a KLR) or TOTAL tread separations (a buddy w/ a BMW 1200GS). Unfortunately I can't add pics as I'm 'restoring' files on my computor, and those pics are in there (somewhere...)!

I noticed that the front tire would be warm after a 25 mile ride, while the rear was ALMOST too hot to touch, so I'm sure the heat causes the separation.

Personally I would NOT use them again, even tho' they were ABSOLUTELY great in cornering, etc, till the separations began.

Yeah I had read about this issue that some people were having. It looks like it is about a 10% issue which I am thinking for the price and how good it does on everything else, it might be worth the risk and just keep a really close eye on it.

My V currently has Shinko RR on it which the previous owner put on and I can't say how much time they have on them but there is no separation happening. That being said it does not have the same tread depth and it is a pure street tire not a 80/20 mix.

Thanks for the input, its really something to keep in mind.

The GS is a massive bike. It should have never been clad with 705s.

I've seen a ton of PR3s with complete tread separation. But people still buy them like hot cakes.

Just remember you are buying a 90 dollar tire... To do light off roading. Not 85mph freeway jaunts on a heavily packed 600+ lb GS...

As of recently I haven't seen anymore of the 705 tread separations on the interwebs. Maybe the problem is fixed?

Got them on

Alright I ended up going with the 120/70 17 56V Pirelli MT60R on the front



and the 150/70 R17 TL 69H Shinko 705 on the Rear



So far they are great. Put about 200 miles on them. The Shinko is barely warm to the touch after an hour ride and the Pirelli is cool to the touch. Both seem to grip the rode great and inspire a lot of confidence.

Im taking them on a road trip tomorrow for the weekend so we will see how they do.

Ha nope just down to Oregon but its suppose to rain part of the time and we are camping so I brought a lot of extra stuff. Also its a test run for a longer trip we are planning this summer and I wanted to carry the same stuff we are going to use then.

I just read where Dunlop is giving a $40 rebate on a set of Q3's. as usual, it started a few weeks after I bought a set---it never fails---as soon as I buy something the price drops about half or big rebates kick in a few days later----

You will be happier if you carry less "stuff" I'm going camping Sunday for about 3 days. I have tent, bag, pad, stove/cooking gear/fuel, basically the same stuff I will take on a 100 day trip to South American and back and it all fits in a 32 quart Rubbermaid Actionpacker, about 20 lbs.

Any tools, spare parts or clothes? cause thats really all I would add to your list. That top pad im returning to a friend so its not really going on the trip with me as I have a second pad in the bag.

Goin' to Ushuaia on the KLR. On the Versys I carry factory tool kit plus tire plug kit and 12v compressor. Clothes, what I'm wearin' plush some poly shorts and T-shirt.

Right on man, im impressed you can fit all that in the bag. I'm pretty new to this so I guess I will figure out what I need as I go and hopefully I can shrink down what I carry.
