I was checking the steering stem bearings today, by feel, not visually. I had the bike up on the swingarm stand with a jack under the engine guard. With the front wheel off the ground I was pulling the forks forward to feel if there was any play. Everything was good but I noticed when I pulled on the forks the SW engine guard would flex a wee bit. The frame welds all seem okay, as far as I can tell. I guess I'm wondering if some flex is to be expected in the Versys frame. I've read that a lot of race bikes have flex designed in to the frames to improve handling. In fact, it was reported that some of the BMW factory riders were unhappy with the handling of the S1000 because the frame was too stiff. What do you guys think? I'd be particularly interested in hearing from any owners who have done a similar test to the one I described. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the feedback jd. I'm going to start with re-torquing the steering stem, as I think there is a bit of play there (so hard to tell for sure). I checked the engine mounting bolts and they're all good, and no visual damage to the frame. I may start a new thread asking owners who have the sw bellypan installed, to see if anyone will do the same "test" I described, and see if they get the same results. Cheers.

Edit: Just wanted to add some background. My bike is an 07, which I bought new. It has 70k kms on it, never been dropped or otherwise damaged. I ride it pretty hard, but probably no harder than what you've seen on your trips. Never jump it or wheelie, and as far as I can tell, never bottomed the suspension.

One thought I had about this, this evening...

If the jack was under the belly pan, and the bike was resting on the jack, then it would have been the closest point of contact to the ground relative to where you were pulling. As such, if you pulled on the fork, that force would be transferred to that contact point. That would have flexed the belly pan since it was in contact with the jack, which didn't move.

If there was nothing in contact with the belly pan, then frame flex would be a suspect. In this case, I think the bike moving against the jack could have flexed the belly pan.

Thoughts?

Just thought I'd update this thread for anyone who was interested. I met up with another Versys owner on the weekend and we did a little experimenting with the front ends of the two bikes. Bottom line is the forks feel exactly the same on both bikes, so I am no longer concerned about any frame issues. The deflection I was seeing in the gravel guard, we reasoned, was due to the fact that the guard was being used as the lifting point for the front end. So there it is, case closed, back to enjoying the riding.:D
