A few days back I noticed some oil on the garage floor, but couldn't see any leaks till I looked at my left fork - wet along the inner tube and the base around the axle.

Searched out a 4" piece of 35mm film, slid it up between the fork lower and the seal, then pulled it around-and-up-and-down a few times, then left it alone while I went to hunt gophers in Alberta for a week....:goodluck:

When I returned I emptied the car, then approached the GREEN HORNET, ran my finger along the fork-lower - DRY!!!

Pulled the front wheel and fender, then the left fork (was able to do that w/ the fairings STILL in-place), then removed the top plug and the spring, measured the oil-level (down a BIT), added about 2oz of ATF, re-checked the level (removed a bit), then put it all back together.

Went for a 220 km ride yesterday, and still dry when I got home.

I cleaned one yesterday also. Laid the V down this time to avoid losing much fork oil. Usually use film also but I was only about 5 blocks from a moto shop that sold Sealmates so I tried that. Worked great.

Where in the heck are you still finding 35mm film?

Do you mean a strip of some past owned negatives?

Hmmm.... I wonder if someday, in some other world, someone will say, "yeah, I was leaking _________ badly, and I wondered if I would even make it home.... I had to stick an SD card in it to stop the "bleeding"......

It just does not have the same ring to it... :(

I used to be a pro photographer, so I have MANY picture-files, w/ negs and contact-sheets, and I just opened the FIRST one I came to and removed the piece that the developer had included, from the start of the roll. About 5" of film...!

Pretty much MOSTLY used Fuji 400 print film, and ran my own "wet" color darkroom.

Eddie, $5 for the sealmate, how about $2 for a lenght of negative ?
Easy to put in the mail and send anywhere for a small fee ...

Just kiding
Or not ...

In a pinch you can also cut out a piece of the plastic, the thin, clear kind, used to make plastic pop bottles or the kind used in plastic packaging, to fabricate a fork seal cleaner.

Phil,
I'm in the midst of prepping for another Alaska ride, but send me your address in a PM, and I'll see what (and WHEN...) I can do.
It'll be 'free', but when I come E on a ride you'll have to buy me a beer...!

Thanks Ed, great approach to this. I will have to select some negs to stick in my owners manual or something to keep handy. Great tip...

Sorry Eddie, I didn't explain myself properly, I was simply proposing a sideline for you, selling your old negative for a few buck

I also have boxes of old film and don't really need anymore

In the meanwhile, have a nice Alaskian trip !
