I've always heard that a new bike should be used for the first 1000 kms without forcing it. Does the Versys needs this type of treatment or like the KTM´s; They are ready to race?!
Also, the first oil change should be done at ?XXX? miles/Km?

The first oil change is at 600 miles / 1000 km. RTFM :rolleyes::thumb:

For break-in, I just followed what the manual said, and babied it for about 1000 miles, no lugging the engine, no overreving, no riding at a constant speed/rpm for long periods.

There are lots of opinions out there of how not to follow the manufacturers recommendations, though. Just watch. There is also at least one long thread on this forum covering many members opinions. :goodluck:

I second that opinion:goodidea: I just purchased my versys and I will change the oil at 300 miles and 600 miles. Take it easy but dont lug it use some compression when slowing down and dont idle it for long periods; other than that ride it and have fun:thumb:

I also broke mine in per manual, main thing is vary your rpms, no long periods at a steady rpm and use engine braking. I had my oil changed at the 600 mile check and at 2500 miles.

The key is to warm up the bike before you start reving it. It's no different whether it's brand new or 50K miles old. If the engine is not at an even temp and circulating oil to all the right places you will end up with increased wear. One thing I found to be effective is to do an oil change very early - I usually get it around 50 miles. If there was anything loose in the engine, you want it out ASAP. Some bikes had what looked like metal shavings in the oil, others didn't. You can't tell until you drain it... ;)

After that, I still do the oil changes at the regular intervals.

I used to think a nice slow break in was the way to go.

But I have changed my mind. Now I think.

The best break in is a track day.

change oil and filter after the first session.

change it again after 2 consecutive sessions.

change it again after 4 more sessions.

the constantly varied throttle and engine breaking is the key.

by the end of the day you will be riding an incredibly smooth and efficient motorcycle.

Hech it only takes 2 1/2 qts per change. cheap.

I would say just ride it normal while varying the rpm's. Don't warm up the engine for more than 2 minutes. Ride easy for the first few minutes until engine is up to temp.

I didn't baby mine at all for break in but I also didn't run it like I was on a track.

I did my first oil change just under 500 miles.

If I do your way Mark, I have few questions...
Is it possible to use just regular oil (cheaper) and finally, at the end of this procedure, use synthetic?
Should I have to change the filter with each of the close oil changes?

OK, I'll start. I broke mine in MOTOMAN style. First oil and filter change at 25 miles. Think that is extreme? Try it and see how much metal is in the oil.:eek: I was so amazed I changed it again at 60 miles. And more times before 2000 miles. Will resume more normal changes now. So far everything Motoman has said in his article is true. I'll surely post if something goes wrong as the miles stack up but somehow I doubt it.:goodluck:

On the ride home from the dealer I was close to red-line many times, but only momentarily, then slowing on compression! At 13,500 miles (synthetic oil, 15w-50 Mobil1 car oil, WalMart filters) it runs great, doesn't use oil, and runs smoothly.
I will do the same next new bike. :yeahsmile:

Yep, ride it like you want it to run. I've done that with my last 20 motorcycles and never had any oil usage in any of them. By the way, they they ran great after "break-in"!
