I received my Supersprox 44T recently and Im considering upgrading the chain to an RK520GWX Ultra High Performance XW-Ring 114T and a Sunstar front sprocket 15T.

Good combination?

You mean RK 520 GXW ? That'd be good.

You'd be better with a Kawasaki OEM front 15T sprocket with rubber damper.

What is the point of the rubber damper in the front sprocket? I mean the rear sprocket is heavily dampened... Why does Kawasaki dampen both?

Having said that, I have an un-dampened 15T inbound. Hope it works :confused:

The rubber damping makes it slightly quieter.

When you are traveling at 40 mph, with a helmet on, the wind noise you hear is many times louder that the front sprocket/chain noise.

But if you ride slow, with your helmet off, you'd hear more sound from it if its not damped.:usa:

After six months and 4,000 miles on my V I swapped to a 44T rear this weekend and really notice the improvements along the lines always discussed here. Longer range in each gear, and less engine braking. Feels smoother. I've put about 50 miles of urban and freeway driving on it and see no reason I would switch back.

My concern had been starts on hills and such with the higher gearing, but I've had no trouble. Here in Seattle you do a lot of steep hill starts. It has been fine.

And on the freeway here, which rarely gets above 65 during the commute, I never got out of 5th gear because I was still below 6k RPM. Makes me feel good about cruising at 70-75 and not being above 6.

New chain and non OEM front sprocket too.

I think this mod falls under the "what's best for me" category. Some like the longer gears, But for others their riding style wants more power burst. I'm into the reach, currently have 15/44, but thinking of switching to 16/44.

Chain issue

Anyone experienced this?

Just had my 2010 Versys serviced at 30,000klms & noticed a 'grinding' noise coming from the chain. I came quickly & I only noticed it when I went riding without earplugs.

Took it to the service centre & they said it was the chain & it was too tight, so they adjusted it. No change.

Put it up on paddock stand & noticed the chain was 'normal', turn the rear wheel & the chain was very tight!. Put a can of WD40 on it + silicone spray + engine oil & ran the engine to see if the chain would loosen up. It didn't.

They say "you need a new chain", naturally they don't have one in stock!

So I can't ride the bike.

Anyone else experienced this?:mad:

IF the teeth are wearing (hooking) on the sprockets then the tip of the teeth can create a noise as they release the chain.

also take chain off and spin rear wheel after axel nut has been tightened to spec.
it might not be the chain.

You mean the chain tension varies as you rotate rear wheel? My original chain also did. I replaced it and sprockets at 2,600 Kms... At 30,000 Kms, your original chain and sprockets would of course be worn out.

Personally, if I were to make the switch, I would go the other way and do a 48 tooth rear sprocket. I know it is more fun on my dual sports to go that direction, so it must be a hoot on a bike with power.
Gotta agree w/ you - TOO high gearing is 'deadly' in the woods.
