Kawasaki Versys Farkle FAQ! Some of the most commonly asked questions about farkling up your Versys!

Definition: Farkle (www.urbandictionary.com)

The word is generally accepted to mean a combination of "function" and "sparkle", hence, farkle. Motorcycle enthusiasts may install accessories, called

farkles (also spelled farkel), to customize their machine.

F.A.R.K.L.E. -- Fancy Accessory Really Kool Likely Expensive

I want to get rid of these POS stock mirrors. What is the mirror bolt size I need to get so they thread in?: M10 x 1.25. You'll need a 19mm wrench to

work on them.

Some Examples:

I want to get new bar ends/mirrors/tassels, what is the bolt size?: M8-1.25 x 40mm

Some examples:

I want to get wider/longer/offroad foot pegs. How tight do I make the mounting bolt?: Tighten the foot peg bolts to 18 foot-pounds of torque with a

torque wrench.

Some examples:

My bolts/mirrors/pegs keep wiggling loose, what do I do?: Use Lock-tite blue and apply liberally to the threads. Re-tighten and let dry.

I want brighter headlights. What is my light bulb socket size?: H7 base, and see the Power Available entry below.

I want to add headlights/charging port/LEDs/GPS/etc. How much power is available to work with?: 95-100w @ cruizing speed (4,000+ RPM) is a safe number

to work with before getting complicated. Remember these systems are based on 12v so to figure out how much wattage you need, look up the Amps rating and

multiply by 12 to get Watts. Often times electrical devices are rated in Mili-Amps or "ma" which is 1/1000th of an amp. i.e. 500ma = 1/2 amp = 6w at 12v.

Also, if you replace an item with a different type (i.e. 55w headlight bulb being replaced with a 75w bulb) to only count the net difference (in this

case 75-55=25w) when adding up your power consumption. There are things you can do that will get around these limitations, but as a basic answer, figure on

95-100w for a baseline.

Some examples:

I want to put on a fancy/loud/flaming exaust system. What size are the exaust headers stock?: Stock exaust header diameters are 34.5mm OD 32.5mm ID

and slip in about 12mm deep into the head.

Some examples:

I want to get wider/steeper/ape hanger handlebars. What size handlebar tube do I need?: The handlebars are 22mm or 7/8" in diameter.

Some examples:

I'd like to get new tires, but not have to replace my stock rims. What size tires should I look for?: Stock wheel sizes are: 120/70-17 on the front

and 160/60-17 on the rear. The rim widths are 3.5" x 17" for the front wheel and 4.5" x 17" for the rear.

What is a "Hugger": A Hugger is a lower fender piece mounted on the swing arm right in front of the rear tire. This protects the electronics and

internal bits from water being flung up there in wet conditions.

Some examples:

What are crash bars?: Crash bars are an external framework that are bolted on either side of the engine housing to protect the engine in the event of

a fall or lay-down. They are usually much cheaper to replace than an entire engine.

Some examples:

Why handguards?: Handguards are a popular option because they serve 4 main functions. First, they protect the hand from rocks/twigs/flying things

that can hurt your hands. Second, they help keep rain and wind effects off your hands in wet or long distance rides. Third, they protect the brake and

clutch levers in the event of a low speed drop. Broken levers suck for driving. Lastly, they just look cool, and isn't that what farkles are all about?

Some examples:

My previous/friends'/other bike has a center stand. Can I get one for my V?: Short answer: no, unfortunately. At this time there are no commercially

available centerstands as the design of the exaust system gets in the way. A couple people have tried making their own which you can read about in this

forum.

This windshield is tiny/huge/warped and I want to get a better one. Is there anything available for my V?: Yes, there are many, many options of

larger/taller/wider/steeper/smaller/curvy/slicker windshields available on the market today that bolt right in to the existing windshield mounts. Everything

from the tall touring windshields to the little crotch-rocket air-foils. Usually all you need is the 4mm allen/hex wrench in your tool kit and a pair of

pliers to swap them out.

Some examples:

I want to put some saddle bags/luggage on my V. What is the best brand/series to get?: The answer to this is as variable as what is the best car.

There is no "Right Answer", there is only "Right for your needs and budget".

This is the first draft of the Farkle FAQ. I've spent many hours digging through this site and others to try to make the data as accurate as possible. Some things I am not too sure about as I could only find either conflicting or vauge information, like the thread pitch of 1.25 on the mirrors and bar ends.

If I have something wrong please let me know so I can fix it.

Any other common questions you would like to see, let me know and I'll be happy to put them in here. If anyone knows the depth of the mirror holes and/or bar ends I'd like to put that in.

Thanks guys!

Well done alex182 :goodidea:

A couple of comments:

I think you will find Mili-Amps or "ma" is 1/1000th of an amp, not 1/10th.

You could add a 4th reason to "Why handguards?" (but in the third slot) "Thirdly, they protect the brake and clutch levers in the event of a low speed drop".

But well done over-all

Looks good. Thanks for the effort.

Here's my comment: Dallas Don offers a center stand (gen 2.0) that you can buy, so wouldn't that make it "commercially" available? (Exchange of money for goods = commerce) Perhaps a hot link to his thread on his product would be helpful.

My commercially available $.02.

it may be terminolgy
but windscreens.. I don't think that the 'solution' is neccessarily a bigger screen, unless you want BMW GS? style adjustable screen that keeps any and everything off. what most people want I suspect is a better screen that keeps the turbulence away fromt he head/helmet. and sometimes the answer to that is a smaller screen..... I use the standard screen inverted and it works fine for me.

Thanks for your effort.

You should add an entry for seat mods. Someone already mentioned a center stand available. Perhaps some links to threads here for subjects such as seat and windshield mods that are a personal preference.

+1 on the seat mod. Maybe some suggestions on replacements for the stock mirrors with some pics (emgo, z1000, etc)

Maybe reword the part of some people have tried to make a centerstand. Dallasdon made one. I have made one, although it is not your typical centerstand.

All-in-all, I think you are doing a great job so far!!:goodidea:

I like the original idea but I don't quite follow the direction you're taking.

What I think would be most helpful is a FAQ for people who google 'Kawasaki Versys' for the first time.
Isn't it how we all got here?
Whenever I'm interested in some motorcycle I end up reading dry reviews from bike magazines or filtering trough mountains of useless information on the bike-specific forum.
Explanation of what this bike really is and how is perceived by actual owner. Strengths, weaknesses, possibilities, what can/can't be done to improve it, maintenance, resale value, usual defects etc.
And from there take it deeper to help answer questions and give suggestions to owners.

I'd like to contribute but what you have going on now seems like 'Motorcycle for dummies'.

P.S.
This forum is fairly easy to search and filter. There are repetitive topics about crash-bars/luggage/windscreens/hand-guards but still a lot of useful information.

Cheers.

OK, some edits made. I was thinking about putting seat mods in there, but my head was killing me by the time I got here. What threads should I link to for seat mods and centerstands?

As to specific brands of replacement parts, either links or pictures would be great to add in.

Yeah, I was shooting for "Versys Mods For Dummies" with this thread because it was driving me nuts trying to find basic information. Searching just the domain for things like the mirror bolt size or how much power was available was coming up with 50+ different threads, but none of those 50+ threads actually just had a straight answer, or if they did the answer was the 4th line in the 3rd paragraph two-thirds down the page... not very easy to find believe it or not.

One thing I'd like to do is to put in thumbnail images that link off to higher res photos of some of the different options in each section so I can show some examples of things like mirrors, windscreens, etc. Unfortunately I'm having trouble with the coding to do that, so if anyone can post the code string to put in a thumbnail and have it link off to another address that would be really helpful. I don't just want to add pictures to the thread because by default they all show up at the bottom of the post and that would get confusing, plus I can only post so many via the reply section here. I think in HTML it would be something like <IMG=thumbnail.jpg<HREF="www.mysite.com/versys/pic1.jpg"></HREF></IMG> but I don't think that's accurate and I don't know if HTML tags work in the BB forum software.

Yeah, this is definately a work in progress. :D

It would be nice to see a listing of available farkles, by category.

Something like:

Huggers
- Pyramid (link)
- Puig (link)
- Skidmarx (link)

Exhaust
- Two Brothers (link)
- Muzzy (link)
- Arrow (link)
- Yoshimura (link)

Crash Guards
- SW Motech (link)
- Hepco and Becker (link)

That sort of thing is really helpful when you're new to a bike. It lets you know what options are available so you don't have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what's what.

Update: I figured out how to add thumbnails as links and added in a couple pictures in each section. I origionally had a LOT more, but when I posted them I got an error about being only able to have 20 images, so it got thinned. All the thumbnails are the same size, and I don't yet know what is causing the picture mis-allignment, but I'll fix it as soon as I can.

If one of the pictures is your bike and you don't want it up there, let me know and I'll pull it.

Labor of love guys, doing my best. :D
