Hey gang,
It is I:rolleyes:; stagehand38... your self-appointed, :blah:resident sociopolitical curmudgeon here at the forum:blah:...with a question especially for all you early adopters of the 'Versys' way of life.....
Factory extended warranties:confused:; are they worth it or am I just a worry wart?
Mines about to turn one year old and I'm about to pull the trigger on a two year extension for the seemingly reasonable price of 400 bucks.

As I have the greatest respect for all the wisdom available here at our forum...

BTW...my boss Bob "the Mezz" Mesinar is out of the hospital (after being broadsided on his Harley) and is now settling into what will undoubtedly a several month stay in a nursing home.

Good to hear the "Mezz" is outta trouble. Hope he heals well and his needs are met through the ins. company. I'm in the same boat with you on the good times plan...can't think of one time that I've actually made use of an extended warranty plan on a purchase. Warranty yes....extended NO.

Waiting to see if it's been worthwhile to others and what kind of hoops they needed to jump through to get some service. I'd hate to pay all that money to have them blame me for the problem...or the like..."it's not our problem" attitude! Good question Stagehand!

its my understanding that the warranty is precisley that, an extended warranty from Kawasaki, so unlike the insurance policies it does have some value.. its also transferable should you decide to the sell the bike within the warranty period. arguably beacuase its an extended warranty it more likely that they have under priced it (compared to you getting work done), and its more likely they aren't going to be an arse of any future claims, compared to an insurance perspective

as to whether its needed... thats a different kettle of fish.
K seem reasonable at fixing things under warranty, such as the cracked exhausts, a reasonably common problem, the buttons failing to work on the instrument panel likewise. rectifier fritzing the wiring harness and so on.

there doesn't seem to be a clear common and frequent cause for failure. so is it worth $400?. My own personal guess is probably not, but it may be a good spend if you want the reassurance in case something goes wrong.

given that Kawasaki will have a good idea of what warranty work they expect in that period and have presuambly costed it out accordingly then they expect the warranty to cost them less than $400 over its lifetime. but any one claim in itself may cost more than that especially if its on a major part. Ive heard of problems with dropped valves leading to engine replacement under warranty.. thats 'kin good value if it 'only' costs you $400.

so its a numbers game, and it how you feel about your bike. at $200 a year it may not be an issue, but it akmost certainly means you have to get the bike serviced at the regular intervals (who wouldn't) and it also means you have to get it serviced professionally (insisting its down at a K dealer won't wash in the EU, but you may have to in the US.. go check)

What do you expect to go wrong with the bike and will the warranty cover it. I do all my own maintenance so I wouldn't bother either way. It seems like there are some pretty high milage bikes around here with no issues. Mine just rolled over 16k yesterday and runs like new.

I'd say get the warranty if you think you might sell the bike within the warranty period, otherwise don't. The warranty will be of some assurance to the new buyer and could also help sell it more quickly.

16k on the clock..WOWSER!!!!That's kinda the way i was thinking. I do my own maintenance so far..no worries.

I've been hummin' and hawin' about this issue....as a matter of fact...today's my One year anniversary so It's buy the warranty today or never!
Just broke the 8k mark and she's runs like the wicked evil mean and nasty lean green machine that I fell in love with a year ago...Can't imagine ever selling my "V". First bike and all..even if I ever feel the need to get something with more power etc.
Love my "V".

I look at it this way if you have a loan on it get the warranty and when you pay it off cancel it that way if something goes wrong you are not burdened with repair payment and the loan payment.Also if it is your first bike or you have limited mechanical ability and knowledge i would get it.

You can get the Kawasaki Good Times Warranty 4 year extension on eBay for just under $400.

If someone only rides 3000 miles a year: a 5 year warranty = 15,000 miles of coverage and is almost certainly a waste of money.

If someone rides 20,000 miles a year: a 5 year warranty = 100,000 miles of coverage and IMO will probably pay for itself (a radiator fan is $300).

If one does decide to sell it after, say 4 years, I have to think that being able to give the prospective buyer the remaining 1 year warranty would increase the potential selling price considerably.

I never get the extended warranty because so far I've switched bikes too often. My thinking is that if the bike will start to fall apart in the extended warranty period, I'll be switching bikes anyway. If it's engineered to live through the extended warranty (which is more likely) then it's probably a waste of money.

That's always been my general view of extended warranties...Even a good way to have a little ...sport...with the finance department at car dealerships, that is to say...""so, If you really think the extended warranty is so important perhaps I should look at a different brand of car" LOL. Watch their jaw drop as you walk away empty handed...he he he !!!!
All joking aside,
Bikes paid for...
I don't plan to ever sell it.
dependability record seems solid.
I think i shall keep my cash in my pocket.

Just had to ask as motorcycles are new territory for me.
( and since i have been doing general maintenance on my own plus the fact that my bud with the "BigDog" chopper who is building yet another dragster, and another that built and rides a supercharged ninja drag bike...both of whom offered to lend a hand with anything that might be "new" territory for my limited but growing skills, well.....seems I have a safety net if anything bad should happen).
Not to mention all of you folk here on the forum:thumb:

All mechanical ineptness on my part aside...at 300 smackers for a bleedin' fan and obviously many other parts that are highly(over)priced, let alone shop time runnin' 'round 100 bucks/hour.....for me the clear choice is to purchase one...if possible I'll take it in for warranty work in the fall so if they want to drag their feet on it I'm getting free storage...Thanks for the E-bay link Hardware....4yrs. for the price of 2?....it's worth looking into that!:)
ed; the warranties on e-bay are U.S. only, I'll check Canadian sources.
