Hi everyone!

I question regarding the Versys 2010:

As far as I know, the shelds covering the bottom of the engine/exhausts are plastic. Is there any way to install a more durable (metal) shield akin to those we see on something like Suzuki's V-strom 1000? Has anyone done this?

Or is it even worth it?

Opinions and advice are welcome.

I've seen skid plates available for the Versys. (twistedthrottle.com?)

I believe they are supported by the exhaust system, so they may not take a "bashing" so well.

Thanks for the tip, trialsguy. I'll check it out. One can't have to much protection, I'd say... :thumb:

SW Motech has created a skid plate for the Versys but it hasn't quite made it to the states yet. I would think you could find a supplier on your continent that could ship you one, or if your dealer can order SWM product they can get you one.
It attaches by brackets to the engine, not the exhaust system. It is more of a gravel guard than an actual 'skid plate'. But offers some protection to the exhuast, oil filter, water pump, and engine underside.

I understand there is another one out there but haven't heard any updates on its availability.

Yes, this would be a good item for your roads. The factory plastic coverings do not cover the bottom, they are just for appearance. I have removed mine, run without.

The stock guards are mounted to the oil pan. Rock kicked up from the front tire hit the guard, the guard ripped the side of the pan stranding me miles from civilization. If the aftermarket guards mount to anything weak then it will suffer the same fate. I probably bought the wrong bike for where I go. I've pounded so many dents in my rims that I,ve about had it.

Yes, the new Husky TE630 would be a great choice.

I finally figured out what we were looking at on your engine photo. A huge gaping hole!! Wow. Sorry to see that. How did you get the bike home?

The SWM isn't my favorite, and will probably cost an arm and a leg, but it's the best thing going out there and it attaches to more secure points than the oil pan casting. Plus the brackets are configured such that they'll bend and give before breaking anything. Definitely not armor for skidding on rocks, but at least keep the gravel off the underside of the motor.

JDRocks says build your own....okay, would be nice. We don't all have the fabrication skills and equipment required. Consider making one for us, we'll buy it!

Huh... Spent time staring at the photo of Mountain Man's bike, or rather, the part of it... Can't catch the hole, maybe 'cause I don't know the knots of the device yet. But I'll take the guys' word for it.

Sorry for your ride, Mountain Man. And I join CJBROWN in his quiery: how DID you get your bike home? I'm asking because I can sometimes get my ass into quite the ditch myself, and sometimes I wonder what it would take to get that sort of device back on track...

Hole (more like missing chunk) is just to the left of the tip of the hose. It's big, bigger than your brain is expecting it to be.

Emergency road service. I was literaly in the middle of nowhere. But for reasons unknown I had 1 bar on my cell phone. When the tow truck driver called me for directions he said "How am I going to get my flatbed up There?" It was funny listening to him coming up the mountain around the numerous switchbacks. From the time I could just hear him till he reached me seemed like forever. You could hear every time he hit a bump his foot would hit the accelerator petal and the engine would surge. You could hear the mirrors coming through tree branches. I'm sure they hate me. Well couple of hours later me and the bike were off the mountain. On the photo you can see the frount mount bolt sheared off. The one in the rear did not shear, instead it took half the pan with it. Keep in mind here nothing hit the pan. As the guard ripped off it pulled at it's attachment points.
