With consumers used to the convenience of refueling their vehicle at the gas station in a few minutes, one of the biggest disadvantages of electric vehicles is the time it takes to recharge their batteries. Now, by separating the energy storage and energy discharging functions of the battery into separate physical structures, researchers at MIT have achieved a breakthrough that
could allow EVs to be recharged in the same time it takes to refuel a conventional car.
The technology could also provide an
inexpensive alternative for energy storage for intermittent, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar
Without a good way to store electricity on a large scale, solar power is useless at night. One promising storage option is a new kind of battery made with all-liquid active materials. Prototypes suggest that these liquid batteries will cost less than a third as much as today's best batteries and could last significantly longer.
I think that e-cars may eventually use a system to recharge as they are propelled at speed. Maybe an air induction leading to a turbine hidden under the hood? And/or solar cells built into the body? They would likely still need a conventional recharge "top-up" but the range could be extended via on board systems.
The future will be of great interest. I would like to experience the massive torque of electric motor on a motorcycle!
