The 4-pin, diagnostic port under the saddle of the Versys-X 300 communicates via the KWP2000 protocol. Unfortunately, the Kawasaki communication system is not standardized, as is explained in the following threads.

KDS Protocol - ECU hacking

Fortunately, the LED dashboard will display the diagnostic trouble codes, as is explained in the Versys-X 300 Service Manual, and the following post.

One can also connect a computer to the diagnostic port using the Kawasaki KDS Signal Converter, cables, software, et cetera. However, this system is very expensive, even when purchasing used equipment.

Fortunately, if you wish to connect a computer to the Kawasaki diagnostic port, the KDS Signal Converter has been reverse engineered in the HealTech OBD-K01 tool.

You can download a sample of the HealTech software at the following link.

The HealTech unit has also been copied by the Chinese. However, the counterfeit system can only use an older version of the computer software, which is supplied on CD-ROM. HealTech warns if you attempt to update the software, you might disable the Chinese unit. :(
