Aloha all:
Picked up the new bike on Oct 1st and have started the cross country trip. I ONLY have a month, so I need to hurry.
So far through seven states: New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, West Virginia......and am currently in central Kentucky. Mostly 250-300 mile days with one mega 600 mile day. I tend to travel completely on backroads/scenic roads so it takes awhile to get some distance in.
I will stay in Kentucky for a bit to visit the daughters and son-in-law and granddaughter.
Updates to follow.
The bike is running great and is a total hoot in the winding roads of the Appalachians. I am running with just a tank bag and a RevPak tour pack so weight is centrally located and between the axles to enhance handling.
I did have one issue in Connecticut. Riding with some friends (they decided to take a day off from work to ride with me for a day out) and was coming down a hill, braking into a turn, when the front brakes felt a bit soft and made an odd noise.
Pulling over to check nothing was amiss and it all looked good.
Made a 1st gear run to about 10mph and braked again.....same thing.
Upon close inspection it turns out the bottom caliper bolt on the left/front had come out. Gone! Missing!
So when I applied brakes the caliper would pivot on the remaining bolt. I could still brake, but now one of the pistons was rotated away from the disc and was still trying to find something to pinch down on (hence the soft feeling) and the upper top front of the caliper was rotated into the disc itself (hence the odd noise). Additionally the rear of the caliper rotated out far enough to contact the wheel and there is a worn area all around the inside of that wheel.
Wired it back in place, went to the nearest town and (luckily) found a bolt of the right size (10 x 35 for you who care). This was at only 538 miles on the bike. You think I am happy with that? Good dealer prep, eh? You can be assured there is blue Locktite on the caliper bolts now.
I have also run through the bike checking throughout for similar issues. Non have become apparent, but I am wary now.
For the rest of the trip I am looking for curvy roads that the weatherman says will be dry.
Wish me luck.
Photos to follow........sometime.
Will this be the first coast-to-coast Versys?
