Aloha all:
Picked up the new bike on Oct 1st and have started the cross country trip. I ONLY have a month, so I need to hurry.
So far through seven states: New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, West Virginia......and am currently in central Kentucky. Mostly 250-300 mile days with one mega 600 mile day. I tend to travel completely on backroads/scenic roads so it takes awhile to get some distance in.
I will stay in Kentucky for a bit to visit the daughters and son-in-law and granddaughter.
Updates to follow.
The bike is running great and is a total hoot in the winding roads of the Appalachians. I am running with just a tank bag and a RevPak tour pack so weight is centrally located and between the axles to enhance handling.
I did have one issue in Connecticut. Riding with some friends (they decided to take a day off from work to ride with me for a day out) and was coming down a hill, braking into a turn, when the front brakes felt a bit soft and made an odd noise.
Pulling over to check nothing was amiss and it all looked good.
Made a 1st gear run to about 10mph and braked again.....same thing.
Upon close inspection it turns out the bottom caliper bolt on the left/front had come out. Gone! Missing!
So when I applied brakes the caliper would pivot on the remaining bolt. I could still brake, but now one of the pistons was rotated away from the disc and was still trying to find something to pinch down on (hence the soft feeling) and the upper top front of the caliper was rotated into the disc itself (hence the odd noise). Additionally the rear of the caliper rotated out far enough to contact the wheel and there is a worn area all around the inside of that wheel.
Wired it back in place, went to the nearest town and (luckily) found a bolt of the right size (10 x 35 for you who care). This was at only 538 miles on the bike. You think I am happy with that? Good dealer prep, eh? You can be assured there is blue Locktite on the caliper bolts now.
I have also run through the bike checking throughout for similar issues. Non have become apparent, but I am wary now.
For the rest of the trip I am looking for curvy roads that the weatherman says will be dry.
Wish me luck.
Photos to follow........sometime.
Will this be the first coast-to-coast Versys?

Great trip!

Back in 2000 I left Dallas & met two friends from the UK in Raleigh Durham. We bought bikes for them and then rode cross-country to CA. I spent five weeks doing it as I had to ride out to N Carolina and then ride back from CA.

Great trip, would love to do it again knowing what i know now - i.e. not be so anal about route & timing do more 'go with the flow' thinking. Stop and take more pictures.

Favourite stop? Death Valley - transcendental.

Least favourite? Pigeon Forge - mental.

cross country

Thanks to Gatorman and DallasDon: if I happen to be near one or both of you and am not on a mission from point A to point B at that moment I will get hold of you here. I would love to meet another person who owns a Versys. So far all I have met is people who ask what it is.
For them that do not know the whole story of my journey: I started in Hawaii, flew to New Jersey to pick up the new bike, and am going ocean to ocean.....then across the ocean back to Hawaii. The bridge is out so I will have to hop a plane and ship the bike at that point in time.
For those of you who would ever consider shipping a bike to Hawaii I would recommend PASHA shipping. This will be the second time I have used them and they are completely uncomplicated, motorcycle friendly, and about $500 cheaper than the next guy.
Every shipped bike gets put on its own special pallet (provided by them). Each pallet is made of welded aluminum, has a repository for each wheel, and has tie-down points on four corners. Good stuff.

Hi Rdbeard! too bad about the brake caliper. Hopefully they didn't extort any extra out of you for dealer prep. I'm in Southern NM and you're welcome to stay the night if you need a place to sleep. PM me if you want to hook up for a ride together. I used to live in Santa Fe, and often ride up that direction.

I wish I had said that

hi antman, thanks for your observation on the contents of the site, they are spot on we need to hear more about the thing we own bikes for,,,, the freedom and shear joy of riding with only your thoughts and the wind to accompany you as you wind through the twist-es and blast along the straights. I don't know why some people even bought the " v " as they seem to want to complain or gripe about minor things, or change the complete set up.:eek::eek:, enjoy this brilliant bike and just appreciate the joy and fun that it can bring you... well that's my rant out of the way,,,,
by the way great post from rdbeard, makes me envious:D:D

Will this be the first coast-to-coast Versys?
Good luck rdbeard. I will be following your thread closely because I am planning a coast-to-coast-to-coast trip on my Versys in the Spring. Mine won't be as leisurely as your trip, so for that I'm jealous. Mine will be a bit of my own private Ironbutt thing since I only have 16 days. I'm compiling a list of "must see" places between NC and Washington state and back so definitely weigh in on what's worth the ride versus what you wish you had skipped.

Ride safe.

DB, don't for get to look up the 'Viagra's' when you get to WA if you have time.

We have a small group here (riding this weekend as it happens) of OR & WA riders.

You probably know we have some of the best places to ride in the US in the Pacific Nortwet, plus BC & Alberta just up the road.

Machog, I have heard about the Eden that you call home. I've never been there, so I'm looking quite forward seeing it and riding there. As plans firm up, I hope I can bother you for some specifics on where to go and what to see.

My original plan was to plot out a coast2coast2coast route of mostly secondary roads. I finally had to give up on that dream for now when I realized that if I did that I would not get to spend any time at all in any one location. My plan now is to superslab it to CO and spend 2 or 3 days in and around there. The only other hard rule that I have is that I want to spend 2 or 3 days in the Pacific NW. Along the way I want to include at least passing shots through Moab (UT), Yellowstone (WY) and the Badlands of SD. I don't know anything about those areas or the stuff that connects them so I'm sure I'm not going to do justice to them by just passing through, but that's about the best I will have time for.

Anyway, I don't want to jack rdbeard's thread anymore, so I'll shut up. If anyone comes across this, though, please PM with ideas. I may start another thread of my own to compile ideas. If I do that, I'll return here and post a link.

Sorry rdbeard. Keep on truckin' (ridin' I guess)

If anyone reading this know of a sight or two along the way that I need to absolutely include, please let me know. I'm currentl
