Couldn't start my Ninjia 650

Hi Guys,

Few days ago trying to have a ride on my Ninjia 650 but had a problem to start the engine.
Noticed the Yellow Engine Light is on and the Warning Indicator turned to red as the picture shows.

Did some research, and add 1 gal new gas into the tank after draining out old gas, but still no luck to start.
Also couldn't get the error code by pushing that 2 black buttons on dashboard.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue? Really appreciated any suggestions!
Oh, BTW, I stored it in the garage for about 4 months with 3/4 tank of gas. (now I know I made a mistake that didn't put stabilizer in the tank even though I didn't have issue starting the engine in prior year)

Welcome. What does it do when you hit the starter?

Did the old gas smell funny like varnish?

Only 4 months shouldn't be a major problem unless the gas was old to begin with. Only partially full is a larger problem because of condensation and moisture in the fuel.

If the bike turns over strong and no fire, then you need to check the spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter. Engines need fuel, air, and spark.

One extra to check that I've done by accident is setting the kill switch to off.
More info as to what or what not is happening would help

Thank you twowheeladdict and Axel for the reply! Actually the gas didn't smell funny, and I think you are right that it should not be the gas issue since the new gas didn't do anything good.

So far the bike only run 5k mile as you may noticed on the picture, so I'm not sure if it's because of spark plugs/filters issue, just feel it might be little early to change the filters per the maintenance manual. But could be, should I start to check the plug/filters for the next step? Also, the bike didn't turn over strong but just fast beep sound after I press the start button. And didn't feel any signal of strong starting. Thanks!

Charge the battery. Check air filter, because rodents like to build nests. If you can get a code it could be helpful. Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on?

Sounds like the battery if I'm understanding right. You should keep a battery tender hooked up specially for that amount of time.

Will do. Also I'll try to get the code even though it seems like the way I found online didn't work. Didn't hear the fuel pump prime when turn the key on. As to the battery, my question is that if the headlight works, it should has enough electricity to start the engine? Thanks!

It takes a lot less voltage to light a bulb that turn over a starter.
You can try to jump it off of a car, don't start the car. Here's some info on batteries if you have the means to test it you'll know what state it's in.

I see, thanks for these useful info Alex! I will get a charger to charge the battery soon. As to the charger, what AMP should I select? between 2 Amp to 10 Amp, also, how long should I charge? Thanks!

Not hearing the fuel pump is not good. If you don't recall ever hearing it, find another motorcycle that you can turn on and hear it. A friend or a dealer even.
Once you get the battery charged, verify if you hear the fuel pump. If not, then it may have died, or the wiring to it is broken, or fuse is blown.

If you don't have a battery tender I'd get one, it will charge it slowly unless it's below 3 volts. may take a few days depending but you'll have it for the future. I have an older one not sure of function if different on newer one but red light comes on for charging then green when charged. Maintains at full charge after that without overcharging. I have one of these I use for my lawn mower battery, you could cut off the clips and add quick connects to have a permanent connection to your bike. It works well and cheaper than an official brand "battery tender"
My "battery tender" only puts out 750mAh, the Schumacher puts out 888mAh

You could pull the battery and take it to Auto Zone if you have them and have them test it. It could be gone which a replacement would be necessary at least you'd know where your at

That's a good idea. I will do that. Also, really appreciated the battery tender offering even though I planned to purchase a new one.

sorry I wasn't offering one just a suggestion on one for purchase that has worked well for me. Do keep us posted on your findings. BTW the sound a fuel pump makes is a hum type of sound for only a few seconds when first turning on the key, make sure to be in a quiet setting to hear it

Oh my bad Axel, was rushed going out and didn't read your reply carefully. I'm gonna take a battery to Autozone in next couple days, and for sure will keep you guys posted.Thanks!

Charge it at 2 amps overnight at least. Or just put in a new battery. They don't last long anymore. If there isn't a certain voltage there the bike will not start. 10-10.5 I think.

Thanks for the details! I just took the battery out and brought it to Oreily (Autozone said they don't test Motorcycle batteries) . Was told the battery is fully charged as the pic shows. I purchased spark plugs BTW. Need to do some research on how to replace it, looks like little complex since they are under the gas tank.

It's a little under charged, should be 12.6. Should be some how to vids on you tube. Have a look at the air filter while you're there.
