3 days and counting...

The Plan;
San Francisco Ca. to Rosarito Mx. Head east to Mainland Mx. to Creel and drop into Copper Canyon for a few days, tour the park then head South to Mazatlan. Ride the Devils backbone up to Durango and loop through Aguascalientes and Guadalahara, do some surfing in Sayulita then back to Mazatlan. Ferry to La Paz and wander North through Baja back to San Francisco.

Time line;
December 18th - January 17th (30 days)

Mileage;
5,000 more or less

I just finished packing and weighing in. Looks to be about 100lbs of goods. 2 pelican 36 litre side case (35lbs each) and a smaller pelican top case.
I am weighing in at 150lbs these days, so an extra 250lbs. on top of the Versy 450lbs.

Ill keep you posted...

Heres a pic of the side cases. I am going to mount the top case tonight and ill take a final pic of the load. I am trying to keep everything in the cases on this trip. It would be nice to go strapless. I am however planning on bringing a 1.5 gallon gas tank.

I have Shinko 705's on in the photo. The back tire is about ready to be retired (about 5,000 miles on the rear tire).
I had a Bridgestone Trailwing sent to my sisters in San Diego, when I get there im swapping the rear tire.
The Shinko's were a step in the right direction as far as better dirt traction, but im not sure if they are the right tire for me. It seemed pretty slippery in the rain and in general on the pavement. It could be my riding style?
I have only tried the stock tire (5,000 miles) and the shinko, so im interested to see how the Trailwings will perform.

I'm also planing a trip to Mexico after new years and I will need some new tires before crossing over. My V has less than 3000m on it and still has the OEM tires on. I was reading a thread by DBD34 and he took his V to SA. He spoke highly of the Metzeler Tourance. I hope to find someone with a tire machine in Texas to help me avoid paying a stealer to put them on.
I may go to Copper Canyon? so I'll be watching your RR for tips.
Ride safe and good luck to ya.

The bike looks great Tincrow. Keeping most of the weight in the sidecases is a good idea. Those Pelican's are tough too, so between those, the Barkbusters, and the Motech bars, you should have some pretty robust tip-over protection.
What about personal gear? Are you going ATGATT or local style?

Good luck, and I look forward to the ride reports as well. It was 9 degrees F here at my house in the Syracuse area this morning, so the time of living vicariously through others on the V is upon me...

I have a first gear kilimanjaro jacket that I wear everyday. I also have first gear pants and liners that I wear 75% of the time.When the heat is on and im taking a short trip ill usually strap the pants on the back.

I have a full face shoei helmet with pinlock visor and shade and clear inserts. This is new to me, but I love it. I can cough on a cold night and no fog! Visor stays down all the time now. Much quieter and warmer.

I have 2 sets of gloves summer and winter. I allways wear gloves.

Steel toe RedWing boots.

Looks like you have separate front brake lines - how do you secure them so they don't get near the treads? (Maybe a pic?)
I just zipped tied them to the fork with a heavy duty tie. The brake lines are pretty stiff and have a specific shape so they naturally stay away from the tire, I added the tie in case they were to move at high speeds. I have been riding with these for about 2,500 miles both dirt and Hwy.

Im here in San Diego waiting for my new tire? It should have been here a couple days ago?
I had a good trip from S.F. along the coast to Santa Cruz then inland through Watsonville to the 101 and down. I ran out of gas outside Buellton (D'oh). I was 8 miles form a station on either side of me, with an empty spare gas tank strapped to the bike. Yes, the tow truck driver laughed his ass off. Cool guy though, we talked about bikes and riding for at least a half hour then I was on my way. I filled up the spare tank and did a test. When my light began flashing I had 25.7 miles till empty.
The spare tank will have gas for the remainder of the trip. D'oh!

I have been in Rosarito Mx. for the last two days. I was waiting on my tire, but UPS never came through. I guess the holiday rush is on.
I ended up getting a Continental with knobby's, and it looks great! Looks like a better tire for the dirt.
I am heading east on the 2 towards mainland Mx. then ill drop into the Wild West. As soon as I get a chance Ill check in. Adios...

On a side note.
I needed to have my new tire mounted asap. I called Peter in Spring Valley (near San Diego). Hes on Craigslist. He did an after hours tire change and mount for $25. He did a great job and I highly recomend him, if you live in the area or are passing through. His number is (619) 995-1863.
