This is my first summer riding on the V. I noticed on the first hot day when I got off of it after maybe 30 miles of riding that it made the sound like someone was taking a really huge hit off of a water bong. This comes from the coolant reserve and the hose leading down to the radiator.

I've filled the coolant reserve up twice this summer just to make sure it had enough.....never over the fill line. The overheat sensor has never come on and the fan comes on when need be(at a stop light or when I'm parking it). The Kawasaki mechanic said it will make some noise, but mine seems excessive.

Anyone else experience this? This is my first water cooled engine, BTW.

Could it be the gas tank depressurizing?

I've heard the gas tank depressurizing before, and that's not what's happening. This was loud and sounding like a HUGE water bong. Not that I know what one of those looks or sounds like, but I've seen movies.

Remove the radiator cap (engine cold) and clean it thoroughly. I use WD-040, blow it dry, wipe clean, repeat if necessary... Replace if damaged.

Stock 1.1 BAR / 16 PSI (SAE range 14-18 PSI) radiator cap Kawasaki # 49085-1066 can be replaced by Stant # 10233 16 PSI cap.

Like Bretta my first instinct says radiator cap, especially if you think the noise is coming from the overflow tank. You're probably hearing gulps of coolant being released from the radiator cap and partially flashing to steam before it hits the relatively cool overflow tank.

I've seen several failure modes. Check to make sure the hose clamp isn't propping up one side of the radiator cap. Also check the lock tabs on the cap itself. I've seen them get bent or the channel they lock into is too shallow. Make sure it's being pulled down tight and evenly. If nothing sticks out then I'd replace the cap, oughta be cheap enough. It's also possible your thermostat is opening late and the radiator cap is actually doing it's job correctly.

Anyway enough rambling. Poke around a bit and let us know.

Do what invader said. I've had this happen twice after long high rpm rides on relatively hot days. The radiator caps fro O'reilley or Autozone are about 1/5 the price of the OEM cap.

I had the same problem about this time last year. I found that I needed to clean my radiator cap, but I also changed the coolant and found more aluminum bits in it than I was expecting. Then when I moved the fan around a bit, a small rock fell out of it.

I began to think that the rock prevented the fan from spinning and that resulted in the radiator cap having to release at least once. Then, the aluminum bits in the coolant just coated the seal on the cap and the cap never sealed to the correct pressure again until I cleaned it.

So I would say, make sure your fan comes on when the bike is warm and then clean your radiator cap. That should solve the problem.

I have changed coolant one more time since then (to install the much loved and hated Thermo-Bob) and found no more metallic bits in it.

Yesterday I replaced my fan. Not really a big deal except the dealer needed 325 for a new one. I bought one on ebay from a 650 Ninja for 50 shipped. Works like it should. I discovered the problem after taking a slow ride up a dirt road and hearing the gurgle into the overflow tank. At home I put 12 volts to the fan plug and it was dead.

Funny thing about you replying to this. Today I was going through my wallet looking for my AMA card and I came across your address that you wrote for me in Colorado.
Yes I still have the Versys and I will hate the day that I give it up. I have not listed it because of the changing delivery dates on the Tenere but I may have to make room for the new one. I have sold a couple of bikes but I still have 7 and I don't have the energy that they demand.
When and where is you next trip north cause I don't think that I'm going to get that far south? I still owe you a couple or more beers.

When I drained and flushed the cooling system and upgraded my thermostat, I found oversprayed black engine paint in the coolant passage inlets/outlets that was flaking off. There can also be some amount of original aluminum casting and machining residue... I removed all loose paint also behind the pump, then cleaned and lightly coated all pump seals and cover O-ring with synthetic grease. :thumb:

Going by the diagram, that doesn't work for me. I've been able to watch the levels, and the levels on both the radiator and reserve are at the proper levels.

The only thing that I've noticed is that when I took off the cap after 12 hours of cooling down, coolant spewed from the radiator for a solid 20 seconds. Seems odd to me being as cooled down as it was.

The cap looked fine, although I'll clean and possibly replace it if need be.

BLERG! This is frustrating. Should this noise be worrying me?

I'm as sure as I can be by just reading what you post that you're hearing the coolant boiling!!! I think the temp sensor is not kicking in, hence the coolant gets too hot...

It's to be expected to have coolant spewing when removing the rad cap, the reserve is higher than the radiator, hence you drained the reserve... Make sure you refill it if you ride the bike, although I'd say to first check that the fan comes on when it has power- connect it directly to the battery as a test. If it spins under direct power, then buy the temperature sensor and replace it- you can reach it from the side without taking the whole tank/airbox etc off...

I assume that it is the same on all Versii, but on my 2008 you have to remove the overflow tank prior to opening the radiator cap. It is a very good idea to keep the overflow tank lower than the radiator cap so that it does not bleed back into the radiator or it will do just that. That is what it is designed to do.

Given the symptoms, there are still a few possibilities.

1) Your fan may not be working. Can you just idle the bike and look and see (or listen) for the fan to come on after a time?

2) Your radiator cap is bad (or is dirty "enough") and it is opening at too low a pressure. I believe that Invader said that these are a good replacement.

3) Some other third thing....:confused:

I would rather be working on my Versys than be dealing with issues surrounding the largest wildfire in New Mexico history - along with record dryness and a nearly complete lack of monsoon rains to date.:(

Just to report back on a few things that I've noticed:

1)Fan is working
2)After taking cap off of the radiator after being cooled down, all of the coolant from the reservoir was then pulled down and pushed out with the cap off, a good 20 seconds worth of coolant spewing out
3)Called Kawasaki dealer, they suggested there was an air pocket and to bleed the system
4)Cap seems perfectly fine

Mine does the same thing. Coolent level fine, fan works, gonna check the cap. I noticed it last year and figured it was what it did as normal operation when the engine was hot. bike still running fine.

(it does this when I run it at 7 to 10 rpm range through the twisties)
