I have a 2011 Versys which is a blast to ride, but no ABS and the brakes just seem inadequate. Put Speigler brake lines on it and upgraded the shoes.
All of the mags tout the new 2016 as a huge brake improvement. Worth taking the hit on my bike and buying new?

Mine is a 14. I don't know how different the abs is on the 16 compared to the 14. If at all. I know several have noted the 15 and 16 have issues with rear brake drag. I will say that the abs on my 14 sucks. If you want a reason for the 16. There are other improvements in the engine and chassis that may or may not be worth it to you.

I've been very happy with the brakes on my '15LT. The ABS has triggered a few times during quick stops. It's always been the rear brake ABS firing, and always with the factory tires. It hasn't triggered for the last few thousand miles with Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 tires. On dirt I've triggered both front and rear a number of times. Contrary to "expert" opinion, I like the ABS on dirt. Maybe if I were riding like a teen on a dirt bike I'd not like it, but for mild to moderate off road situations the ABS does a fine job.

I can't say how it compares to previous generations of V. You could test ride a new bike to see if the brakes generally feel stronger than your current bike.

My '08 w/ SS brake lines (two front, single rear) was GREATLY improved over stock. The '15 has BETTER brakes, tho' the rear was GONE by 12K miles....

I just traded in an 05' Vulcan 1500 Classic FI for a 2015 Versys 650 LT and I think the brakes are excellent compared to the Vulcan. This little bike will stop a dime. I'll have to get used to them before I put myself over the handlebars.
