Just curious. Heading out for a trip next week, and while going over the bike, noticed a minimal amount of play in each pad (able to make them very slightly rattle at the point of where the slider pins pass through) forward and back, no side to side play. Both front and back brakes. Everything is snug when the brakes are applied. I haven't noticed any problems while riding, and assume there is a tolerated amount of movement of the pad on the pins. Is there? Someone want to run out to the garage and see if theirs do the same. One of those things that I never really thought of in thirty years of riding, so of course, I am now wondering if it's normal.

As long as there is some free play in the pads and they are not prohibiting wheel spin, they are fine. It is normal for the pads to lightly contact the disc, you can frequently hear it while pushing a bike around without the engine running. If you can't push the bike on level ground, then you have a problem.
